An Analysis of Lord Byron’s Apostrophe to the Ocean “Either you decide to stay in the shallow end of the pool or you go out in the ocean,” said Christopher Reeve who once was Superman then spent the remainder of his life in a wheelchair paralyzed from the neck down. In life, the ocean often serves as an analogy. People have exclaimed that their emotions are like the waves of the ocean. Lonely people often compare their feelings to that of a person stranded on an island in the middle of the ocean. Even Lord Byron recognized these traits in the ocean. In the poem Apostrophe to the Ocean, Lord Byron discusses his love for the ocean. In the seven stanzas that Byron wrote, each discussed different reasons for his love for the
Lord Byron, like all of the other Romantic poets of his time, loved nature. In their poems, they sometimes wrote about nature, and how beautiful it is. Sometimes even the Romantic poets even like nature more than other humans like Byron exclaimed in the poem, “….I love not man the less, but nature more….” Page 856. The ocean is a huge part of nature, nature does not just exist on just land like some people think. However, the world’s oceans make up about sixty percent of the world. Therefore there is nature that is not viewed everyday by humans. A perfect example of nature in the ocean would be coral reef scuba diving. I personally love nature because when I need to relax and enjoy life, I tend to turn to nature. Nature can provide entertainment for most people as long as you learn to appreciate nature for what it is. Also, what is wonderful about nature is that nature is never the same in one spot around the world. For example, there are no two Grand Canyons or Yellowstone’s in the world only one of each. Making those locations sought after and special. Nature can also provide people who are struggling mentally or physically, with comfort. Clearly, I relish nature like the Romantic poet Lord
Lord Byron, like his peers Percy Shelley and John Keats, loved to write about nature. Those three poets; Byron, Shelley, and Keats sparked a new idea of appreciating nature which was known as Romanticism. Not only did those poets inspire the people in their time period, but also inspired the future generations such as myself. I am truly blessed to have lived in Wyoming in the early parts of my life because I have a better understanding of the beauty and sheer curiosity I have developed for nature. Have I not lived in Wyoming in my early years of my life, I may have not had the same feelings as I would if I had lived in Chicago. Once I grow older, and have children, I hope to teach them the same lessons that I learned when I was a
