A Love Poem’s Translation
Mario Benedetti was a Uruguayan novelist, journalist and poet. He was born in 1920 and was considered one of Latin America’s most prominent writers. His poem “Hagamos un Trato” is a very relatable poem that illustrates a love and bond between two individuals. This assignment gave me a new outlook on the importance of translation and how innovative it can be. I chose a Spanish poem because I have a basic understanding of the Spanish language and grammar through a couple of years of foreign class. Since I had not recited Spanish in years, this translation led to a challenging and interesting experience.
Translating a poem is no easy task and requires a new style of thinking, but exploring a poem in a foreign language compels a higher level of engagement within poetry. When I first began scanning this foreign poem a feeling of being overwhelmed came over me. I had so much to do and it seemed I had so far to go. In “an ABC of Translating Poetry”, Willis Barnstone exclaims, “the translator plays with nothingness, with la nada, and from nothing comes everything” (Barnstone). The way the lines of the poem speak to the reader is up to the reader’s own translation. When reciting “Hagamos un Trato” I truly attempted to keep in mind the affection and harmony Benedetti placed in his poem. When researching the poet, Mario Benedetti, I learned that he was exiled, leaving his native country and wife behind. I took this into account when I read and deciphered this poem. This poem embodies a great deal of love and trust. In this poem the narrator is asking for a sign of mutual trust. First of alll, the poem is divided into nine stanzas, where each one has four lines. In addition to that, one can spot a few enjambements for instance (l.9-10). This stylistic device has the function to support the flow of the poem. Furthermore, it is crucial to take a look at the choice of words, when analysing the language.

Vallejo utilizes the form of free verse in this poem. He uses free verse to go beyond the constraints of usual structures and forms to express his point of view on the hardships of the world, without regards to the “beauty” of the poem. This poem consists of thirteen non-rhyming couplets, each being identical in structure. This poem is without rhyme because Vallejo wants the content to be perceived as deeper than a rhyme scheme. This poem captures the immigrant experience between the two worlds, leaving the homeland and towards the new world. The poet has deliberately structured the poem in five sections each with a number of stanzas to divide the different stages of the physical voyage. Section one describes the refugees, two briefly deals with their reason for the exodus, three emphasises their former oppression, fourth section is about the healing effect of the voyage and the concluding section deals with the awakening of hope. This restructuring allows the poet to focus on the emotional and physical impact of the journey.
All in all Anzaldua's essay is very motivating and “colorful”, due to her utilization of metaphors she uses give the reader gains insight into her writing process, most of all into the process of connecting images and building ideas. As this poem is written in open form, the imagery of this writing is what makes this poem poetic and stand out to you. Even from the first lines of this story you can already picture this young girl sitting at her desk, doodling on her college ruled paper. The poem uses many literary devices to enhance the meaning the words provide. The poem starts at the beginning of the story as the moon comes to visit the forge. The moon is said to be wearing “her skirt of white, fragrant flowers” (Lorca 2) as its bright light penetrates the scene. The poem states “the young boy watches her, watches. / The young boy is watching her” (3-4). The repetition of the phrase emphasizes the young boy’s infatuation with the moon. The scene is set with intensity by the phrase “electrified air” (5) and a tense feeling is brought into the poem. As “the moon moves her arms” (6), she is given traits of being alive and having her own human qualities. Personification of the moon into a woman exemplifies the desire that the child would have for the woman, and creates a more appealing form for the moon to appear as. The child cries, “flee, moon, moon, moon” (9) with urgency, showing his concern for her. He warns her “they would make with your heart / white necklaces and rings” (11-12). This refers back to the metaphor that the moon is made of hard tin, but still personifies her by giving her a heart. The moon is additionally personified when she says “ young boy, leave me to dance”(13). She has now taken the form of a sensual and erotic gypsy dancer furthering the desire of the young boy. The novel has confused many critics and readers because it reads like poetry, yet in actuality it is a narrative. Cisneros admits that many of the vignettes are "lazy poems." This means that they could be poems if she had taken the time to finish them (Olivares 145). At many times throughout the novel the words rhyme and can almost be put to a catchy tune. For example, the chapter "Geraldo No Last Name" reads like a poem with end rhyme and a structured pattern. "Pretty too, and young. Said he worked in a restaurant, but she can't remember which one" (Cisneros 65).
Overall, in Julia Alvarez’s “Bilingual Sestina” the repetition sheds light on the author’s situation and the difficulties she faces when assimilating into a new culture. Accustomed to Spanish since her childhood, the language evokes an inviting and comforting feeling for her as it also articulates nostalgic memories. On the other hand, she struggles and faces several conflictions with English as she does not currently have memories or passions that are connected with the English culture. By the end of the poem, the author resignedly admits that she wishes to familiarize herself with English and form new memories that will help make the language significant for her. Although it will not be simple for her native tongue in Spanish to fully comprehend English, it is important that we do not let the nature of words limit us and our perceptions.
