It can be argued that in the extensive brochure of American historical figures, no character has been interpreted and misinterpreted more often than the American Indian. Though the historians that narrate the earliest history of Native Americans are anglo-saxon scholars that highlight the celebration of nineteenth century “civilization” and the period of conquest, this Anglo-centric perspective of early nationalism and superiority was reshaped by historians of the latter 20th century. These more recent scholars complicate the notion of glorified colonialism, and introduce a sympathetic school of thought that regards the Indian American as a victim of early conquest.
