My Impression of “What is an American?” After reading the document “What is an American?” by St. Jean de Crevecoeur, published in 1782, I think that the author described the Americans very appropriately. In more than two hundred years ago to now, America is still a fusion of people from around the world. People enjoy the liberty and fairness in this country. The author was successful in making me feel that America is a dream continent where people want to live. I am from China and have been living in this country for about eight years. Through my effort, I finally achieved the US citizenship last year. Although I have only lived in this country for few years, I was attracted by the freedom, the democracy, the fairness and the justice of the country. In America, the rich and the poor are not so far, but in China, you can see the very opposite. In China, there are a lot of things are impossible to me, however, in America, I got a lot of helps from others and opportunities. For example, when I was in middle school, I did not like the way the Chinese taught. Moreover, I feel too rigid. I needed to memorize a lot of content if I want to get good grades, it is too hard. In America, everything seems easier, and I only need to comprehend and a lit bit memorize for the test then I can get good grades. Anyway, I feel that the opportunity here is everywhere. Consequently, even though in my age, I still have the opportunity to study at college, to obtain my degree and do not need me to pay even a penny in school.
