In the readings for this week, which were chapters 2 and 3 of the Hook and Spanier book American Foreign Policy Since World War II, the central theme was America’s ideas and behaviors during the very beginnings of the cold war. The chapters started off with the victory of World War II and the state the world was in. It was plain to see that while America came out actually better than it was before the war both economically and politically, all the other countries took some sort of damage due to the war. These gaps in power and stability soon caused Russia to act in it’s own self-interest. Since even before the war Russia had been an area of change and battles. This proved to be accurate when Russia began to go back on it’s word to let democracy run freely in the eastern states and began to control a major of counties as puppet nations. To combat this The United States made foreign policies that overall were extremely successful. These policies would be known as the containment strategy. The containment strategy as well as the Truman Doctrine, which was a policy that pledge to protect Greece and Turkey from the threat of Communism, became the driving force in the Cold War against Russia. These policies, in basic terms, showed other countries that the United States not only wanted to take the lead in taking on the rise of communism but also that they had the power to do so. It was through these polies that Europe got the support it needed to rebuild and begin to develop it’s own resistance to not only communism but prevent the factors that caused World War to from happening again, known now as the European Union. These policies also paved the way for the United States most known and successful attempt at gaining soft power that was the air drops in West Berlin. As Russia blockade all of berlin from the western world and any kind of ground penetration an immediate act of war, the supply drops not only gave the citizens of West Berlin much needed supplies it showed that the United States were willing and able to stand up against Russia in any situation. An important thing to note about this event is that is wasn’t the United States alone that performed the air drops but also major western countries like France and Britain. However, this is still seen as a success for America and gained them much influence and appreciation from other countries in Europe and else
