An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge by Ambrose Bierce is a mysterious short story about a man named Peyton Farquhar and his last few moments in his life. The story tells of the protagonist being hanged from a bridge and his thoughts before the deed is done. He wants to escape those that captured him and embrace with his family. The story is broken up into different parts that give a better background on why the character is on the bridge and how he makes his escape. As he escapes, the reader gets a sense that they should cheer for this man who has avoided death. Looking closer into the story, the reader can see how the effective uses of symbols and themes piece together in the story. It shows how close the main character is to his death. As the colors of the world around him begin to fade, he slowly awaits his demise. Bierce says, “The man in the water saw the eye of the man on the bridge gazing into his own through the sights of the rifle. He observed that it was a gray eye and remembered having read that gray eyes were keenest, and that all famous marksmen had them. Nevertheless, this one had missed.” (9). This part in the story, the main character says that those with grey eyes have the greatest of shots so he would die. Instead, the sharpshooter misses which is surprising that the person missed. Another thing, the character notes is that when he is in the forest, the insects begin to look different. “ —he saw the very insects upon them: the locusts, the brilliant bodied flies, the gray spiders stretching their webs from twig to twig. He noted the prismatic colors in all the dewdrops upon a million blades of grass.” (Bierce 9). The world around him begins to fade of color because of his death is drawling nearer.
