The “Allegory of the Cave” was drafted over a century ago by the philosopher Plato yet, the main themes and concepts of the story are still used in the modern film “The Matrix”. Plato’s allegory tells a tale of a group of men held in captivity and are having their minds controlled based upon a false version of reality. In comparison, the storyline of “The Matrix”, directed by Andy Wachowski, is based upon a falsified alter reality where humans are enslaved inside simulations created by machines thus controlling their minds. The “Allegory of the Cave” and “The Matrix” both question a universal truth and how one version of realism can contradict the very foundation of reality. “The Matrix” and the “Allegory of the Cave” revolve around captivated people who are subjected to thought control. In the form of virtual simulations and shadowed imagery, the controlled subjects are forced to accept a falsified version of reality that has physically restrained them since birth. A direct quote from “The Matrix” perfectly illustrates the reality behind the fabricated form of reality in which the character Morpheus, Laurence Fishburne, said, “the world you see is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth. A prison for your mind“( Wachowski Matrix). The shadows presented on the walls of the cave have the same effect on the human brain as does the matrix simulation. The shadows are designed to manipulate the viewer’s perception of life, forcing the subject to believe in a false reality. The prisoners are forced into a position facing directly at a wall (Plato). Meanwhile shadows are constantly appearing, resembling a movie screen or a puppet show. In comparison, the matrix simulation was created as an artificial dream world to permanently occupy the human mind.
