“The Matrix,” and “The Allegory of the Cave,” are both philosophical stories that changes one’s way of thinking and how they perceive reality as it is. There are two “worlds” within that the truth meets more than the eye. It starts of as an illusion, but once that barrier is broken, the truth is revealed. The prisoners in the cave and in the Matrix are set in an illusion as their only knowledge is what their senses are telling them. The way they achieved knowledge, Neo and the freed prisoner learned that their senses are inefficient and that they it can easily be deceived. Both these worlds are controlled by a greater power. For example, Neo lives in a world that is in full control of machines and the prisoner in the cave is subjected to the ones who are responsible for their state. They both also escape from the world they were trapped in and released into the real world. Neo realizes that the life he has been living in is nothing but him held as prisoner, under the control of Matrix. The prisoner in the cave realizes that the shadows he has been looking at all his life have just been, shadows. He soon realizes it was just an act held up by the ones creating the shadows all his life. He sees the fire and is immediately blinded because he has never used them before, just like Neo waking up from the pod. He looks outside and is blinded again by the real world. The man that is freed went back into the cave to try to save his friends and expose them to the real world, and never go back to live there. This happens to Neo except Morpheus is the one that reveals the truth to him and he is the one that saves him so he can fulfill the prophecy made by the Oracle that he is the ”chosen one.” Characters in both stories realize and are shocked by the fact they have been lied and cheated to all
In one of Plato’s works called The Allegory of the Cave he goes over what it means to get higher knowledge and the path you have to take to get to this higher knowledge. Plato also goes over how this higher knowledge or enlightenment will affect people and how they act. He ties this all together through what he calls the cave. Plato tells Glaucon a sort of story about how the cave works and what the people within the cave have to do to get to the enlightenment. The 1999 film, The Matrix, shows many philosophical instances. Comparing this film to Plato’s The Republic: The Allegory of the Cave, and Descartes’ First Meditation on Philosophy allows one to gain a deeper understanding of the work. Reality is a concept that may be vague to many people due to their given circumstances. The environment and the mind a person is in allows for different perceptions of reality. The power of reality falls in the eyes of the beholder. As shown in The Matrix, Neo was not the One until he believed he was, which can percept into everyday life; how someone thinks can affect how someone is.
In The Cave prisoners are chained, from birth, to face a wall within a dark cave. These prisoners have never had any interactions with the outside world. Their only understanding of the outside world comes from a bridge and a fire at their backs. When people, animals, or objects cross the bridge, the fire projects their shadows upon the cave wall which the prisoners are facing. To these prisoners, the obscure shadows which dance along the walls of the cave are the only “real” thing they know. To their brains, which have never experienced, seen, or came into any contact with anything in the outside world, this is reality. To the prisoners, reality is a jumble of dark shadows which occasionally move from one end of a cave wall to another. This is their perception of reality because it is all they have ever known. While The Matrix does not involve prisoners being chained to a cave wall, the ideas within it are very much the same as in The Cave. The Matrix modernizes the originality of the Allegory of the cave and adds a more feelings towards the question of reality and how others interperts it. The film and the Allegory have many similarities and differnces but they revolve around the same metaphysical question. Even thought they have many similarities and differnces but the important ones for me are: the film and the allegory's view on reality to others, Neo and the freed man are controlled and the final, the difference between Neo and the freed man are the experince of life.
The world outside the cave represents paradise some might call it even, some might call it enlightenment, etc. I believe it is a representation of Valhalla in its own essence because the good must suffer to reach it or wherever they wish to go .This is why I think the prisoner shirks away from Plato's version of a philosophical heaven ,because when the prisoner arrives he feels pain at the blinding light the pain he is feeling is his illusions falling away, which can be very painful if you are emotionally attached to your beliefs or have philosophical phobias .Very much similar to the pain ,fear and hatred caused by Socrates attempts to enlighten the Athenians resulting in his death. The Matrix, once being released was a world-famous film that involved a lot of thinking and the ability to interpret complex ideas. However, these two topics of fate and freewill were creatively and smartly submerged in this film. The pill, jujitsu and Oracle scene were three main examples of the effect this all had on The Matrix, however there were a few others scattered throughout the film. It remained to be quite a mysterious concept but gradually as more in-depth thoughts came to mind, it seemed to be quite interesting. By exploring these themes it forces us to think if we are in a Matrix and what are reaction would be like if we were to find out that the world we lived in was a fake, never our true reality.
In this allegory, the depictions of humans as they are chained, their only knowledge of the world is what is seen inside the cave. Plato considers what would happen to people should they embrace the concepts of philosophy, become enlightened by it, and see things as they truly are. As we have mentioned in class, Plato’s theory did not only present itself in his allegory, but also in the Wachowski brothers’ hit film, The Matrix. In the film, the protagonist, Neo, suffers from a similar difficulty of adapting to reality, or the truth, which we will see later on. Neo is the main character of ‘’The Matrix” and is captive in a false reality created by the Matrix a computer program, which has taken over the world. In Plato’s Allegory, the prisoner understands reality experienced in the cave and the real reality outside of the cave. Another similarity that “The Matrix” and the Allegory have is the acceptance of the truth of what Neo and the prisoner must go through when that happens they will acquire a deeper knowledge. In conclusion both stories are similar in their ideas. The stories are about people searching for the truth so they can be free. At the end of Neos phone call is something that could have been said to the "puppeteers" in "The Cave." That he's going to show the people what they don't want them to see, A world without rules or control, a world without borders or boundaries and most importantly a world without them. There were many key points that I was able to relate and analyze in this story. I still have no doubt that this movie was based off Greek Philosophy and a great piece to choose.
