In All Quiet on the Western Front, Remarque promotes anti-war ideals by showing truth in his novel. Throughout the text Paul and his comrades experience all stages of the war that civilians would not be exposed to. The reader witnesses youthful soldiers turn old before their time. One can see the division that separates soldiers from everyone else. The anti-war theme present throughout the book shows the verisimilitude of war, through symbols, characterization, and other themes in the novel.
The theme of authority is an example of the overall anti-war message. Kantorek has a honorable and trusted position as a professor, but abuses this power, spouting pro-war propaganda. The boys are angered and Paul says that they are forced into this situation by, “a thousand Kantoreks” (12). One example of this is between the Germans and their enemies, the Russians. Paul questions why they are made enemies by, “a word of command” (142). Remarque has a soldier question the war they are fighting in to show how people do not want to be at war but are taught and pressured into believing the ideas that lead to war. Another example are the civilians and civilian life that soldiers can no longer relate to. Paul returns home on leave and is treated to beers and cigars. A man calls him a warrior but, “dismisses [his] ideas loftily,” when he tells his true account of the war (124). The soldiers are desiderata, yet no one cares what they have to say. The man treats a ‘hero’ to a drink, but ignores Paul’s thoughts and opinions, showing how the general population were shown a faceless figure to get behind, not actual soldiers.
