Alfred Nobel: The Man behind the Prize.
Alfred Nobel is known for starting the Nobel Prize. This prize is given every year to some of the greatest minds in the world who through their work, help to better society. In opposition to the improvement of society, is the fact that Nobel’s other known inventions brought much death and destruction to the world (Frost). This combination of inventions helps to pose the question who was Alfred Nobel, and why did Nobel create this prize to help the world. In this paper I will find out who was the man behind the inventions that brought so much death and destruction to the world. I will also find out why he created this prize to have people work to better the planet and protect life itself. Lastly there have been many awards given out, and I will investigate some of the winners and the role that the Nobel Prize played in their subsequent lives.
It seems to me that if it was not for Alfred Nobel’s invention of blasting caps and dynamite the industrial revolution and the great gold rush wouldn’t be the same as we know it today. The explosive properties of dynamite allowed people to move mountains to build new roads, and dig deeper mines to reach the vast wealth underground. This creation made one of the biggest impacts in the world in my opinion, and it fascinates me to know that the creator of something so powerful seems to have shifted direction in his later years to a more peaceful manner.
The reason I wrote this report is that I wanted to find out where Nobel came from and what forces played a role in his creation of such a destructive power. Also, I am very curious what caused his shift in perspective to create a prize to better society. Over the years there have been many winners of the 5 Nobel prizes, and I intend to investigate some of their individual contributions to help determine criteria for winning the prizes.
Alfred Nobel was born to Immanuel and Andriette Nobel in Stockholm Sweden on October 21 1833 (Frost). Nobel was the 2nd youngest of 4 children. His father, Immanuel Nobel, was a great inventor but a very poor business man and his mother, whom he dearly loved, “kept the family together” (Fant). If we are able to determine the specific time and place a cell is transported then, we can surely mutate the cell to prevent the spread of terminal diseases. First of all, interphase included three stages: G1 stage, S stage and G2 stage.Cells in the G1 stage will undergo the primary growth. Such as making more cytoplasm and organelles which makes the cells mature for use the next stage of chromosome replication. In this phase the cell is carries on its normal metabolic activities. Then, DNA copied performed in S stage. In the final stage of interphase is G2 stage which produced an organelles and proteins that need to be use in cell division.
In Eastern cultures, meditation has been practiced for over two thousand years. Through this training a culture has developed in which an individual is empowered to engaged in preventative behaviors, which reduce stress and morbidity, resulting in a general state of wellbeing, with stability and mental peace in the face of everyday challenges (Richardson and Lutz, 2008). Over the last half-century, the western-scientific community has begun to evaluate the efficacy of the eastern methods of meditation. In the modern western world there is an over abundance of stress, pressure and over stimulation. These conditions often result in stress-related morbidity, high levels of anxiety and mental illnesses. This cause and effect relationship is well established, and typically emphasis is placed on symptom control and less on preventative behavior modification. There are clinically documented see table 1, meditation practices that can be taught over a short period of time to an individual which have been shown to have positive results. Meditation can be used preventatively in supporting immune function and during illness as a method to aid healing and wellbeing for nominal costs. This paper will make an literary examination of a variety of studies of which examine the role of meditation training in regards to promoting immune function in athletes, recovering cancer patients, in addition to reducing stress and promoting well being in business professionals, cancer patients and seasoned meditation practitioners.
The Nobel Laureates 2011 documentary explains why the Nobel Laureates received their percent of the Nobel Prize and showcases their life. What or who inspired their life work and how they accomplished their goals. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf’s Nobel Lecture honors past Nobel peace activists, explains what her generation needs to accomplish to aid the future to be an improved place. She also expresses her gratitude in a completely humbling way. The documentary and Ellen Sirleaf’s lecture both teach and show what is happening and how it can changed.
If “teaching meditation or techniques of flexible, novel thinking…could be used to improve health and shorted illness earlier in life,” the lives of many individuals would drastically improve (Langer, 2014). Mindfulness encourages awareness and creative thought while providing the added benefits of improved health. For example, individuals who suffer from a great deal of stress on a daily basis may profit from the addition of meditation to their daily routine. Over twenty-five hundred years ago, Buddha Guatama practiced meditation and came to what is known as “The Four Noble Truth,” an important principle in Buddhism (Elder, 2010). This principle informs the reader of what suffering is and how affect is. This is a great example of how valuable meditation is- on the very first session ever recorded, the awareness that came from it would later be the foundation of a new religion. Sadly, Jim Valvano died two months after he accepted the award. But this speech is still ingrained in our minds. Through the ethos appeal in this speech, Valvano showed the audience why he deserved the Arthur Ashe award and convinced them to donate to his cancer research foundation. Throughout the different parts of the acceptance speech, Valvano shows his courage and love that helped him to win the award in the first place.
Western medicine has recently discovered the powerful affects of meditation, by allowing doctors to treat the body and the mind. Meiosis is specialized cellular division of sex cells. This type of cellular division occurs in single and multi-cellular organisms that undergo sexual reproduction. This process is split into two cycles: Meiosis I and Meiosis II. Prior to the start of meiosis, interphase occurs. Although interphase is not a stage of meiosis it is a vital preparatory step. It allows cellular growth, DNA replication and prepares for cellular division. Each cycle of meiosis is broken down into four stages for a total of eight stages. Philip Noel-Baker won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1959. He created the Friends Ambulance Unit during World War I, which helped French front line fighters get medical attention. He helped in the creation of the League of Nations after the first world war and its replacement the United Nations after World War II. He was against war and studied disarmament throughout his life. He published two books about disarmament in 1936 and 1958. He captained the British Olympic track team and was the only Nobel Laureate to have won an Olympic Medal. During his Nobel Lecture he speaks about the future and the resolution of conflict. He hated war and had always wished for a future without it. His speech had a tone of Hope. Hope for what could come from the future and how humanity could be better as a whole.
