Others, however, see it as an ideal and a goal that one must reach. Alexander Perchov is living in a time and place where a man is expected to fit society’s definition of masculine. A man is expected to be sexually active with women, tall and handsome, and not sensitive or emotional. At first, when Alex talked to his brother, Little Igor, he portrayed himself as an ideal male and in his eyes a premium person but Alex realizes that he has to be honest with his brother and take off his mask of masculinity. Alex wanted Little Igor to look up to him as well as want to be him one day immensely so before he began to accept himself, Alex pretended to be someone he wasn’t to impress Little Igor. Alex decided to show Little Igor a “smutty magazine” so that Little Igor would be aware of the “many positions in which [Alex is] carnal” (Page 3). Alex wants to Little Igor to think he is the epitome of a masculine man to which Little Igor should look up to so he pretends to be this ideal man in a society that is often carnal with girls and talks about it. Once Alex has embraced his personality to an extent, he acknowledged that he had desired Little Igor to “feel as if he has a cool brother” and an older brother who had a life he wishes he could “impersonate one day” (Page 144). All that masculinity represents empowerment is what seems to appeal to men nowadays. In Michael Kimmel’s Guyland: The Perilous World Where Boys Become Men, the novel presents the irresistible desires that men seek in order to receive the approval of other men. An approval where men gain access to the concept of Guyland, where young men become masculine in order to fit in socially and to feel empowered. However, achieving absolute masculinity leans toward the use of violence that is presented in the media, presenting a message where violence is used for the purpose of getting what one desires.
In the essay, “The High Cost of Manliness,” writer Robert Jensen discusses the harmful effects of having male specific characteristics, such as masculinity. Jensen realizes that men’s actions and ways of living are judged based upon the characteristic of being manly. Beginning with Jack Tallis, we are not told outright, but it seems masculinity includes being the provider for the family, even if that means long nights away from the home. Realistically, when someone is more powerful, they have the ability to set the rules. Men have historically held power in society, which means that women did not have as much stance or freedoms as men have had in the past. For example, Canadian women did not have the right to vote until the year 1916. This factor has continued to trail into the present day, creating the ‘weak’ image towards women, overall forcing and pushing men to become the opposite of this factor.
