Critical thinking is the ability to evaluate and produce open-minded reasoning, and is very important for daily life. A critical thinking failure is the inability to have fair reasoning, therefore a person would be biased and skeptical. Alex Karev, in the hit ABC show Grey’s Anatomy, displays a critical thinking failure because of how close-minded he may be in certain situations. In comparison with Meredith Grey, Karev was neglected as a child and brought up with violence. This played a significant role in his cognitive development, which impacted his critical thinking skills and lead to poor reasoning. In episode one and two of season thirteen, Karev decides to act prior to thinking, and it may impact the rest of his life drastically. After an argument between him and his girlfriend, Karev finally walks home to apologize and finds another man falling on top of his girlfriend. Out rage and with little hesitation, Karev beats the other man nearly to death. Instead of making the choice he did, he could have stopped and asked questions about the situation. His father would have been the type to be skeptical and controlling of situations. Karev was raised with those traits to be close-minded, so that is how he treated all of the situations in his life. He is quick to jump at a situation, but does not stop to think how his actions will affect life afterwards. Also, his best friend, Meredith, socially contributes to the critical thinking failure. Meredith is close-minded when it comes to interaction with other people around her. She sticks to her ideas of how certain situations should be and stands by it. Meredith stood by Karev after he almost killed the fellow co-worker, and was even going to lie for him, because they share similar critical thinking
