The Life and Crimes of Al Capone Alphonse Capone, better known as Al Capone, only attended school till 14 years old and grew successful to earn $105,000,000 yearly or $1.3 billion (in todays money). Capone met a gangster named Johnny Torrio after he dropped out of high school. Torrio taught Capone about the importance of maintaining a business. They started their “business” in Chicago after the 18th amendment went into effect. Torrio would later retire because he was almost assassinated. Capone would then become the boss of the business (Biography.com Editors). Al Capone changed crime and the bootlegging industry throughout his life.

Capone had to move his business to Cicero, Illinois. That is where Capone and his brothers, Frank and Ralph would infiltrate the government and police departments. Capone would then run for office in Cicero. He ran for office by kidnapping opponents’ election workers and threatening voters with violence. He would win office because of this, his brother Frank would be killed in a shootout with Chicago police before he would win office (Biography.com Editors). His friend Frankie Yale helped Al smuggle huge amounts into Chicago. His bootlegging from New York to Chicago was making him rich, but something happened (FBI.gov Editors). Billy McSwiggin who was a Chicago prosecutor, was a friend of Capone but was shot accidentally by Capone’s henchmen during a rival gang shooting. Capone was blamed for the murder of Billy McSwiggin. He wouldn’t be convicted due to a lack of evidence (Biography.com Editors).
Capone was later convicted of tax evasion. He was sentenced to 11 years in prison, he was forced to pay $50,000 in fines and $30,000 for court costs (Melissa Burdick Harmon, “Badfella the Life and Crimes of Al Capone"). He was sent to Alcatraz after spending 2 years in a prison near Atlanta. Capone had gotten syphilis in Alcatraz, he was released and sent to a hospital in Baltimore after serving 6 of his 9 years.
