The 1920’s was an extraordinary time period filled with flappers, speakeasies, and gangsters. One of the most notorious gangsters during this time was a man named Al Capone. On February 14, 1929, seven bullet riddled corpses were discovered inside a garage inside a lonesome garage on Clark Street owned by gangster George “Bugs” Moran.
Al Capone grew up in Brooklyn, New York; his parents came from Italy, so he had some Italian background in him. He was the fourth child out of nine; he went to school until he was fourteen years old, but he eventually dropped out to help earn money for his family. Right after he dropped out, he joined a street gang called the South Brooklyn Rippers. When he grew older, he joined a new gang called the Five Points Junior. These gangs never carried out any major crimes. The only thing they did was steal.
The Five Points Junior introduced Al Capone to a New York mobster named Frankie Yale. By watching Hale using violence to keep control of his turf, Capone followed in his footsteps.Al Capone worked in an Inn where he saw a man and women sitting at a table. He whispered a rude comment into her ear, the man that was with her was her brother Frank Gallucio. It escalated as Frank punched Capone, but Capone didn’t back down as he tried to fight back. Frank Gallucio pulled out a knife and cut Capone from his ear all the way to his mouth. That is how he got the nickname Scarface. A little while after the fight, he met a blonde Irish girl named Mary. They dated, got married, and had a son. Al Capone kept his business away from his family. His prison number was eighty five while he was in prison, his brain started to deteriorate because he contracted syphilis from all the women he’s been with. His condition eventually got worse, so he had to be moved to a hospital. On January 25, 1947 Capone died from a heart attack at the age of 48. The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre was failure; “Bugs” Moran mocked Capone for not being able to assassinate him. Eventually Moran was found guilty for robbing a bank and was sentenced to jail for ten years; he later died from natural causes at the age of 65, and after all the assassination attempts by Al Capone and “Bugs” Moran neither of them won the battle for control of Chicago.

Johnny Torrio, a ganster that gave Al a job in a gang and knew Al did not mind violence and often had him beat up people who were unable to repay loans. During a fight in a bar Al was taughting a woman and received a razor cut on his cheek by the woman boyfriend, which gained him the nickname "Scarface." Bugs Moran was the criminal that lead crime in North Chicago (History.com para 2). Throughout the 1920’s, Moran and Capone fought for control over bootlegging and prostitution (History.com para 2). Accordingly, Capone and Moran had been trying to kill each other and their gangs ever since Johnny Torrio was sent to prision (History.com para 2). With Moran's assassination attempt on Capone and a 50,000 bounty on Al Capone’s head, Capone starts to plan Bugs Moran's death (History.com para 4).

With the prohibition came possibilities for large alcohol based profits. Torrio knew that Big Jim could make extremely large amounts of money, but Colosimo could not be persuaded to try his hand. Capone began using the Italian heritage at a young age with a slight twist of dastardly aggressiveness. Being kicked out of school at an early age from assault of a teacher then joining a gang was the future for Capone. Torrio left all his work in the hands of Capone, and Al did not disappoint. He was successful in making money. Prohibition alcohol, gambling, prostitution, speakeasy’s, and hits were just a few tactics of his reign in Chicago during the roaring twenties. With his attitude and ability to practically decide who will win elections made him so fearful, and if you ever crossed him you were due to payment for ticking him off. Valentine’s Day and the small-thug are just two examples of the raw decisions of Capone to commit murder. There is no possible answer to the amount of killings Capone is responsible for. Al Capone was finally caught after all the chaos and killing in 1931 where he would serve in Alcatraz and in Baltimore until returning to Miami where he would dance with the devil one last time. Torrio was a gangster who taught Capone the importance of maintaining a respectable front and on how to run a racketeering business. Torrio introduced Capone to the gang life where he joined Torrio’s gang, the James Street Boys gang, which later came to be known as the 5 Points gang. Capone, like most gangsters got in brawls and during a bar-fight he gets a cut across his left cheek from a razor or a blade and received the name Scarface for the scar that was left behind.
Al Capone was convicted of mass murder after ordering his gang of mobsters to gun down 9 members of a rival mobster family execution style. It was said to be the most brutal mass murder in history. He was held at Cook County Jail in Chicago until arrangements could be made for his transfer to Atlanta. On May 4, 1932 he started his prison sentence there. It was not until August of 1934 that he was transferred to Alcatraz. He spent 4 1/2 years there. It wasn’t an easy time for "Big Al". He got in a fight with another prisoner and was put in isolation for eight days. He was also stabbed with a pair of shears while he was getting his hair cut. After being diagnosed with a terminal disease in 1938, he was transferred to Terminal Island Prison in Southern California to serve out the remainder of his sentence. He was released in November of 1939 and died in his Palm Beach Mansion on January 25, 1947.

In the roaring twenties, the life of organized crimes was at its peak. What was the greatest mob hit ever pulled off in history? Well I'll tell you. It all happened on Valentines Day, the morning of February 14th, 1929. This incident was call, "The St. Valentines Day Massacre". The man behind this infamous crime was none other than, the infamous Al "Scarface" Capone. Al Capone was the all time greatest mobster of all time. The idea of organized crime fascinates me in so many ways. Capone was the only person to have pulled off such a crime. Al Capone was top gangster in Chicago and was one of the greatest members of the Italian Mafia and George "Bugs" Moran was the leader of the Irish/German mafia and he was the main target behind this hit. He targeted Capone because Al Capones had a bounty on his head, $60,000,000, and found George Moran as a threat. George was Capone's biggest threat of all. He needed to take him out quickly.
