A Notorious Mobster

In the “roaring” 20’s, Alphonse Capone was one of the most notorious mobsters. From the start of his life Capone was involved with small gangs, his involvement only growing bigger as he aged. Capone was not only ruthless, and notorious, but in his days, he was very feared. He never let anyone get in the way of his mob or his desires. Capone was treated like a celebrity in the “Roaring 20’s” and his power lasted a long time.

Al Capone was born on January 17, 1899, in Brooklyn, New York. He was the fourth born of nine children, not all born yet. He was raised in the rough part of Brooklyn, “Williamsburg”. In sixth grade Capone got into a fight with his teacher, it was at that time that he dropped out of school and never came back. At this young age, Capone started getting involved with small criminals (MacNee 13). On December 30, of 1918, when Capone was just 19 years old, he got married to Mary “Mae” Coughlin. Capone was imprisoned in Eastern Penitentiary, where he stayed until March 16, 1930. Not too long after he was liberated for good conduct, but placed on the America's “Most Wanted” list. In 1931 Capone was accused of tax avoidance. He was found guilty and was sentenced to 11 years of prison. In 1934 Capone was transferred from the prison he was in, in Atlanta, to one of the most dangerous prisons in America -Alcatraz- located in San Francisco, California. Capone’s sentence was soon reduced to 6 ½ years, due to good conduct. Capone was released but still couldn’t return to his life of being mobster. He was growing old and was suffering from Syphilis. He became bewildered and unstable. After he was released he retired to a mansion near Miami, Palm Island Palace. Capone died on January 25, 1947 of cardiac arrest at the young age of 48 years old (“Al
