Section 1: Identification and Evaluation of Sources This investigation will explore the question: To what extent did Asian Americans play a role in the mobilization and support of African civil rights movements in the 1950’s and 1960’s in America? The first source analyzed will be the book Afro-Asia: Revolutionary Political and Cultural Connections Between African Americans and Asian Americans, written by Fred Ho and Bill V. Mullen in 2008. This is a book of various collections of writings contextualized to the historical alliances and cultural connections between African Americans and Asian American and their struggle against oppression; a highly relevant source as its purpose and content parallels the entire thesis of the investigation.

The civil rights movement was a popular historical movement that worked to allow African Americans to have equal rights and privileges as U.S. citizens. The movement can be defined as a struggle against racial segregation and discrimination that began in the 1950s. Although the origins of the civil rights movement go back to the 1800s, the movement peaked in the 1950s and 1960s. African American men and women, along with whites, organized and led the movement from local to national levels. Many actions of the civil rights movement were concentrated through legal means such as negotiations, appeals, and nonviolent protests. When we think of leaders or icons of the movement we usually think of Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. Even though Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. are important figures, their participation in the movement was minimal compared to other unknown or forgotten figures. Howell Raines’s, My Soul Is Rested, contains recollections of voices from followers of the civil rights movement. These voices include students, lawyers, news reporters, and civil right activists. Although the followers of the movement were lesser known, the impact they made shaped the society we live in today.
Race and racial identity has always been the heart of American history. In the United States, these forces were very strong especially for African-Americans who were emerging from a long time of slavery and oppression. This led to the rise of Civil Rights Movement which mostly composed of the black revolutionists and a few white supporters. This essay focuses on the life of an African-American in the 50s, how they were involved in the movement and the success that the movement achieved.

Erika Lee’s “The ‘Yellow Peril’ and Asian Exclusion in the Americas” goes in depth on the topic of Asian exclusion in the early 1900s. As previously discussed in last week’s presentation, the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act was the first antiracial law. What we did not discuss was that it was the law that set the trend for anti-racial laws against Asians in other countries as well.
Although multi-racial coalition between different immigrants groups is the most important force for civil right on the West Coast, it wasn’t until the 1960s and 1970s that diverse communities with different histories began to self-consciously unite as “Asian Americans.”
Civil rights can be defined as the rights for individuals to receive equality. This equality includes the right to equal jobs, justice, the right to be free from harsh treatment and discrimination from the whites in various ways. These rights include education, voting rights, employment, same sex marriages, housing, and many more. Civil rights include gay and lesbian rights, women rights to vote and hold positions in offices, African- Americans and Hispanics as well. Looking at it from a historically, the civil rights movement is the fights, protest, and demonstrations all in a non-violent form by African-Americans to achieve equality amongst whites. Today, civil rights can be used to describe the call for equality for all people regardless of culture, race, sex, age, disability, national origin, religion, or certain other characteristics.
Segregation was an issue in the past that a lot of the population did not wanted to deal with. Even some presidents did not touch the topic because it could cost them their re-election, but as time went on, the topic of African Americans wanting equality in all aspects of life increased among audiences and since then nothing has been the same.
“Treat others as you would want to be treated.” This is a well-known quote that many people use around the world. This quote basically means that if someone doesn’t like to be treated in a poor way, then they shouldn’t treat another person in a poor way either. African Americans had a difficult time dealing with unfair treatment back in the days. They would frequently be looked down upon just because they had different colored skin. Many African Americans grew tired of the way they were treated. Some of them stood up for what they believed in. Whether it was in a form of a March, speech, or protest, they would not back down for their equal rights. One of the most widely known incidents that took place during the Civil Rights Movement was known as the “Greensboro Sit- In”. The Greensboro Sit- In had a very powerful effect on the Civil Rights Movement.
What is theology? The word “theology” comes from two Greek words that combined mean “the study of God. There are more than 20 types of theologies. Black liberation started the American struggles of the 1960’s. In liberation theology there are 2 groups, the oppressed and the oppressor. The poor are the oppressed and the rich are their oppressors. This kind of theology contextualizes Christianity in an attempt to help those of African descent overcome oppression. This paper will focus on Black Liberation Theology and will explain how it discovers God and how the Biblical God inspire the prophetic work of black liberation theology.
The Asian American community in the contemporary period face a lot of race relation issues which all interconnect within each other. Asian Americans face the basis of “Model Minority” that purportedly whitens Asians leading to the belief that there are no issues such as racism and poverty within the Asian American community. With that, they face the issue that there is no racial discrimination against Asian Americans due to the racial barrier being contextualized within a “black or white” framework. Another problem they face is mainstream America’s lack of awareness to the diversity of the Asian population, which causes a lot of misperceptions and misdirected racial hatred towards certain ethnicities within the Asian race. This causes the Pan-Asian community to not be supportive, unwilling to support each other, in order to avoid racism by avoiding being associated with that ethnicity just because they look alike. This causes the Asian American community and the ethnic groups within to be invisible to the American community as they lack organization and unification to have their voices heard.
The Civil Rights Movement of the 50's and 60's was arguably one of the most formative and influential periods in American history. Hundreds of thousands of civil rights activists utilized non violent resistance and civil disobedience to revolt against racial segregation and discrimination. The Civil Rights Movement began in the southern states but quickly rose to national prominence. It is of popular belief that the civil rights movement was organized by small groups of people, with notable leaders like—Martin Luther King, Jr, Rosa Parks, Medgar Evers, and even John F. Kennedy—driving the ship. That is partly correct. The Civil Rights Movement, in its truest form, was hundreds of thousands of people organizing events and protests, working together to ensure that every American—whether black, white, brown and anything in between—had the right to a prosperous and harmonious life.

I don't understand how you can be an African American that believes that now is not the time to speak up. I was told by a friend that now is not the time for the #blacklivesmatter movement. She also said that news is more depressing now because everyone sees the things that happens to African Americans. She believes that there are more important issues that we should be focused on instead of black lives. All I have to say to others who might also think like this is “If not now, then when?”. When will be a good time to focus on the oppression that our people have been dealing with since slavery? If your answer is “When more important issues are solved”. That translates to never to me.
