Adversity affects people’s characters and personalities every day. Although adversity may not affect everyone, it affects an abundance of individuals every day. I have faced adversity in my life. Ever since I was little I have been playing soccer, and every day I have been trying to get better and better. My parents compare me to my sister every day due to the fact that she plays soccer as well. Being compared has changed me into a more hard-working individual and made me a better person as a whole. Adversity can come in forms such as bullying, hardship, and danger. All of these forms create adversity and can greatly affect their characters. Ever since we are young, our parents shape our characters. They shape us into who we are as teenagers and even young adults. Our parents cause us to be more confident, more outgoing, and more sociable. They also allow us to become our own individuals and think of our own ideas. Much like our parents shape our characters, so does adversity. The creation of adversity can also come from a more prominent form, known as bullying. As a result of bullying, people become less confident and more reserved. Danger can also create an abundance of adversity by hindering people from doing what caused them to be in danger. Hardship can create adversity as well. Oftentimes, hardship comes from financial or work situations. An example is as follows: two people are competing to obtain money to fund a new product, creating adversity not only between the two individuals, but also between the person who did not acquire the money. This would deter the non-winning individual to not compete again because they know there is a possibility that they will not win. Some might argue that because adversity does not affect every single person's character, then adversity does not genuinely affect an individual's character. This is untrue because not everyone faces adversity in the same way. Some may take adversity harsher and be less open to criticism than others. Adversity could affect a person's character in either a positive or a negative way. My friend Ashtin has faced adversity in a negative light for almost her entire life. Ashtin is on my soccer team and ever since her and her little sister have started playing soccer, their parents have compared them. Her parents will constantly ask why she cannot have “as many skills as Camdyn” or why she does not do everything that Camdyn does. As a result, Ashtin has become exceptionally less confident than she would be, had her parents not compared her to her sister, Camdyn. Not only does adversity come from outside sources, it can also be internal and come from one person's own thoughts of themselves. What someone thinks of themselves can cause internal adversity. A person constantly believing that they are not talented enough to do something is an example of internal adversity because they are thinking that on their own and no one has told them that before. Many people think that they have gone through the worst—that they they have faced the most problems. But have they met Henrietta Lacks, Douglas Mawson, and Phineas Gage? Henrietta Lacks, Douglas Mawson, and Phineas Gage are all amazing people who have gone through the worst for the consideration of science. Doctors took healthy cells from Henrietta Lacks without her consent, and they then used them for research to make millions of dollars. Going on a hard, difficult journey was the story of Douglas Mawson; he also lost his only friends and almost died a few times. Phineas Gage’s story is also filled with adversity, in which he had an iron rod shoot through his head while staying conscious. Out of all of these people, however, Phineas Gage endured the most adversity for many reasons.
Adversity is defined by the Merriam-Webster's dictionary as, “A state or instance of serious or continued difficulty or misfortune.” The Supreme Justice Sonia Sotomayor has overcome adversity many times in her life. One of the first adversities she encountered was at the age of 7 when Sotomayor was diagnosed with diabetes. She soon realized that “She would not depend on the adults in her life to keep her alive. Instead she gave herself her own insulin shots”(Barnes). This shows that Sonia had little support from the adults around her. A major factor in the development of character through personal struggle is that it shows a person what they are willing to do to succeed. One example of this is the acclaimed author J.K. Rowling. She and her daughter suffered from poverty prior to, and during the beginning of writing the infamous Harry Potter series. Mr. Green said, “The real hero’s journey from strength to weakness.” Surprisingly the uniquely unwanted situations created by these phases is the best part of the game called “life.” It is the journey that matters, because the harsh truth is, that the destination of human kind is death. A great example of one of these phases would be a college student graduating and stepping into the real world. The strength in is this particular situation is the college degree that is obtained by the student and just the feeling of being at a good point in life and just the great satisfaction , until of course the weaknesses slowly builds with time in this entirely new phase called reality. Many students come to realize after college that the amount of money they need to pay back in student loans is extremely enormous and that to for a person that doesn’t have a job. On top of that in the real world, you’re nobody with no identity and most the time people just don’t care for you. So you start to feel worthless even with a college degree and you just have no support system to guide you to your comfort zone. However there is good news also. Mr. Green says that due to the situation, it will help a person not be a jerk. Which is always good to have morality on your side. Everyday, we go through situations and experiences that affect us in someway, perhaps even change us. Different situations have different effects. The more difficult the situation is, the more of an effect it has on us. Those hard times can be called adversity. How do we, as humans, react to adversity? What are the possible effects it may have?
In society, people react to adversity differently. They may choose to overcome those difficulties or they are unable to adapt to those adversity can cause them to suffer from loss of identity.

A person’s character is developed by the surroundings around them as well as their experiences. The Roman poet Horace quotes “…Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents in which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant…” I agree with the Roman poet, Horace, in that adversity has a way of waking talent from slumber. Adversity can encourage people in ways success and wealth cannot, as there is a benefit in the hardship. It is stated in the article, How People Learn To Become Resilient “But the remaining third developed into ‘competent, confident, and caring young adults.’ They had attained academic, domestic, and social success—and they were always ready to capitalize on new opportunities that arose” (Konnikova). Although there had been children growing up in the same conditions there was a handful that became people you wouldn’t have thought they were capable of becoming. The children all had been facing the same adversity, so why did only one third become better people than they started off as? The answer is simple, they had the drive and capability to overcome the adversity instead of submitting to it. Instead of being content with the life they were given, they sought out to create opportunities for themselves and it benefitted them immensely. In the article The Deafening Silence Nancy Johnson states: “I dreaded speaking” and “Soon I’d drive home to take my place at the anchor’s desk or in the field…”. The two quotes are said at two points in Johnson's life; the first, when she was a young child and afraid to speak, and the second, when she was an adult with more confidence she thought she was capable of. The adversity faced may seem trivial to others, but the effort taken to overcome the adversity is exceptional. It may seem that she gained resilience from other people, but she gained her confidence from within, although it cannot be seen. Johnson could have easily succumbed to her adversity, but because of her will to achieve her dream, she overcame her fears and has fulfilled her wishes. Adversity plays such a big role in our lives that it's almost invisible. We don't realize that practically everyday we face it and set it up to determine who we are going to be. Sometimes people are given a really crappy deck of cards and don’t know how to handle them. When were in a difficult situation, or faced with adversity we have two choices. Battle through it and become an even greater individual because of it or succumb to the situation and give up. It it all depends on how much determination a person has to fight through the adversity and in turn, become a better person.
