Learning about new cultures is my favorite thing to do. I interact well with others and enjoy networking with new people. I have found that my ability to meet new people is a trait that makes every visit I have taken to different countries an enjoyable visit. I wish to participate in this program because it has always been a goal of mine to study abroad. By participating in this program I hope to learn about another culture, make international contacts, and gain valuable international business skills.
Study abroad has facilitated a personal, transformational experience. Gaining a new perspective of the world and an insight to different culture has allowed for a new sense of self, which I have sustained since being home, and in turn have become more resilient to change. Exposure to a new cultural context created challenges that threatened aspects of my existing identity and created possibilities to discover parts of a new identity that I had previously not been in touch with.

That experience and seeing more of the world is what encouraged me to take more classes abroad. I was really exposed to a different world when I went to India. We started in Mumbai, a very large city, and ended our trip in a village in Jamkhed. That was the first time that I really discovered something completely different from my life in the States. I got to see one of the biggest slums in the world located in Mumbai and got to hear and work with different NGO’s from Mumbai, Pune, and Jamkhed.

Going to study in a new country can be a stressful experience, from learning the culture norms to new foods. Culture shock is common with international students. Culture shock can include, meeting new people, language barriers, social behaviors, and a sense of community. A students comfortability with the culture of their new home can determine their learning experience. It can be an emotional rollercoaster, being so far away from family and friends. American culture is difficult to understand. International students find Americans to be confusing. Social norms vary depending on the part of the country a person is in.

International students face many different challenges when studying abroad. This is due to many factors. First they are living in a country very far away from their own. The country they are studying in also has a very different way of life than theirs. Also the laws in foreign country are much different than the laws in their own country. Due to that they face a lot of problems trying to adapt to this new culture. Studying abroad can be one of the most rewarding experiences in a college’s students career. For many colleges, having their students can mean an increase in tuition, higher application rates, and overall better reviews by their students. The world is full of wonders and once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, that we take advantage of. Traveling is the ultimate education and it never fails as a teacher. It teaches you things no class can about the world and yourself. Seeing a historical spot and being in the environment it is in teaches you what no text book can. Most people hear about what is happening in the world through the bias not understanding media. However, if you are a traveler the real world influences you in a way the media will never be able to. We understand how the world works with its many cultures and lifestyles.
