The topic of the Adoption and Safe Families Act has been in effect for some time now, but as November, 19, 1997 President Bill Clinton made some changes and revised the law to make the ruling better for the children as well as the families involved in the case. “The Adoptions and Safe Families Act of 1997 (P.L. 105-89) was signed into law by President Clinton on November 19, 1997. The new law, which amends the 1980 Child Welfare Act (P.L. 96-272), clarifies that the health and safety of children served by child welfare agencies must be their paramount concern and aims to move children in foster care more quickly into permanent homes”. Between 1982 and 1992, the nation’s foster care population doubled. The General Accounting Office (GAO) estimated in 1998 that there were 500,000 to 600,000 children living in foster care placements nationwide. One major cause of these increased numbers is drug use”. The children deserve better and a more stable living condition. If they cannot provide this they are better off with someone else who can provide that for them. I am in favor of reunification when it is possible and will help families get to this point, it is my job at Camelot Care Centers. However, I feel at times it is a no win situation for me as well as for the system with so many more young parents and the rapidly changing economy. In closing, from the reading the conclusion in my personal opinion has gotten better when it was revised by Bill Clinton. The children in the system have received more rights than they have previously. Even though it is a horrible situation for any child to be taken from their mother and father at any age the state and government are trying to make it as best as possible for the child. This child’s interest is the most important out of anyone’s because they did not ask to be brought into this situation, but they do deserve respect, attention, and most of all
