Many of the settings also mention that the reason for the delayed speech was due to the child’s inability to pay attention to a task and listen. Some children had a hard time keeping a two way conversation going at the ages of three or four. Services are best provided when they are in the classroom; it helps promote natural language in social contexts. Keep in mind that the family, teacher, peers and the child are all part of a system and it is important for SLP’s to focus on teaching students how to apply their social skills naturally in these environments ((Rogers-Adkinson & Stuart, 2007). Documenting performance may provide the child with a clear understanding, on how to communicate in the classroom (Kjellmer, Olswang, Oetting, & Redmond, 2013). SLP’s frequently work on the child’s pragmatic skills, helping the child develop vocabulary, especially feeling word, so they can properly express themselves in multiple situations (Rogers-Adkinson & Stuart, 2007).
