Social media has become an integral part of our daily lives and is changing how we speak, write, and the language we use to communicate with each other. For individuals using social media words such as “like,” “retweet,” “hashtag,” “trending,” “pin,” “lurker,” “unfriend,” “viral,” “Facebook me,” and “follow,” have come into regular use and each word has its own meaning. For example, one may simply press a button to express “like” or show in agreement on Facebook or “retweet” on Twitter to share a message with others. Other words such as “hashtag” categorize information and make it easier for users to search topics while “trending” allows users to find out the most talked about topics. For many, the use of social media has become an addiction. Anyone who uses social media must know there are many dangers associated with regular use. These risks include lack of socialization, invasion of privacy, identity theft, defamation, stalking, isolation, lack of socialization, and adverse health effects. Social media engages us to communicate more freely and post information that we would never reveal in real life situations leaving our guard down and setting us up as prey for unknown predators. Spending hours on social media prevents us from going out, having human contact, and experiencing the outside world. This lack of live physical interaction with others can result in serious health conditions such as substance abuse, depression, and anxiety. The negative effects associated with using social media will continue well into the future if we go on at the current pace. Only when individuals become more mindful of what they post and how much time they spend each day on social media sites can these negative effects be changed. Although social media does serve a purpose in our society, there is no substitute for real life relationships. Our actions, the way we speak, how we write, the language we use to communicate and even the relationships we have with others has been impacted by social media sites. Along with social media sites comes new terminology and use of words with new meanings almost like a foreign language that must be learned. Joseph Kahn, in the article, “What Does ‘Friend’ Mean Now?” shows how the word “friend” has taken on a new meaning as a result of social media. The use of this language and these sites is a bad thing that has many negative effects on American culture. Many Americans have become addicted to social media and are at risk of invasion of privacy, identity theft, defamation, stalking, isolation, lack of socialization, and adverse health effects. In addition, Americans are substituting a virtual world for the real one and are not enjoying what this world has to offer. American traditions are at stake if individuals are glued to electronic devices and addicted to social media sites. Moreover, continued use of this language can cause increased grammatical errors and more broken use of the English language in our everyday lives. This trend will continue far into the future, if Americans do not modify their current behaviors. Only when people become more selective in their posts on these networks and limit the amount of time they spend on social media sites will there be hope to reduce these negative
