The Acne-Diet Connection The acne-diet debate has been around for years and still seems to be hanging on. I have had many clients over the years that had been told by a dermatologist or family doctor that there is no connection between the foods they consume and their acne. This is a fallacy that needs to be dispelled. According to the ‘Archives of Dermatology’ (1981) a well-known dermatologist Dr. E. Williams Rosenberg made a valid point in the article “Acne Diet Reconsidered,” when he suggested it would be a good idea to study populations whose diets are different from our western diets. Could one of their main motives be that they have a vested interest in preserving their corner of the market, which generates millions of dollars each year from their production of an extensive array of acne drugs? Pharmaceutical companies want to protect their patented formulas from non-pharmacologic remedies that can actually be much more effective when it comes to treating acne. For those who are acne prone, it is crucial to understand the unquestionable connection between the diet and how it affects the skin. I have had numerous clients over the years that tested this theory, either by accident or even a possible slight disregard, thinking possibly they could consume a certain amount of the foods that once aggravated their acne initially without the negative consequences. Another study which proves diet absolutely affects acne is the“Clinical and Histological Effect of a Low Glycaemic Load Diet in Treatment of Acne Vulgaris in Korean Patients: A Randomized, Controlled Trial” focused on the results of 17 acne patients consuming a low GL diet and 15 acne patients on a control diet.
