Achilles’ story is told throughout the books the Iliad and the Odyssey. After being a major character in the Iliad, Homer, gives him a speech that is considered out of character for the mighty Achilles. It contradicts everything Achilles stood for in the Iliad and it is very hard to see how his speech is consistent with how he was portrayed in the earlier book. There are however certain parts where he was concerned with kleos but then there were also other parts where life itself was more important to Achilles. Achilles had a desire for battle and to be victorious because of the glory that was awarded for it. The quote that was put into the Odyssey goes against everything Achilles stood for because he fought in hundreds of battles, not caring about living or dying but only about his recognition. This kleos that he so desired seemed like it was the only aspect of life that he coveted. He wanted to accumulate as much honor as possible so that he could be worshipped as if he was one of the gods. Achilles did have that option; he was given a prophecy and a choice between life or eternal glory. The allure of glory proves irresistible when he must avenge the death of his beloved friend Patroclus. The quote shows the interaction between the two heroes and the discussion of the differences between their two worlds they no inhibit. They each find “the grass greener on the other side”. Odysseus envies Achilles’ strength and glory that he won and Achilles envies Odysseus for being alive. The quote mainly adds to the character of Achilles and his choice of prophecy.
