Abstract: Margaret Thatcher

The essay explores the life, times and legacy of Margaret Thatcher, the most outstanding female in the 20th century. The controlling idea is that she was a woman with great ambition, endeavour and determination to overcome difficulties of reaching her dream. Her ambition gained her trust from others gradually and made her the first female Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. She struck to sweep away a great prejudice against the mere idea of having a woman as an important political member . As a Prime Minister, she determinedly made three notable achievements to Britain. She won admiration from all over the world. Thus, she should be remembered to all.

Margaret Thatcher: Britain’s “Iron Lady”

In the 1930s, a teenage girl named Margaret began thinking seriously about becoming a chemist and decided to acquire the best possible training in this field. Instead of an ordinary university, her goal was Oxford. The headmistress of her grammar school, Miss Gillies, plainly disapproved her ambition for two reasons. First, the daughter of a local grocer like Margaret had better not try to push herself beyond her proper place in life. Second, five years of Latin was required to pass the entrance exam at Oxford but Margaret knew no Latin at all. Faced with these obstacles, Margaret simply shook her head, refusing to give up. In just a year, her Latin miraculously became well enough to pass the Oxford exam with a high mark.

Margaret was no luckier than others. She deserved it. Margaret Thatcher, nicknamed “The Iron Lady”, was later known to the whole world as the first female Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and the leader of the Conservative Party. Nothing is impossible. Her...

Less than twelve hours later, “she reaffirmed the Government’s determination to withstand and eradicate terrorism”(Thatcher by Kenneth Harris) in a calm and utterly controlled manner. Similar things happened again and again, but her determination was never shaken. She managed to keep her promise.

For her whole life, Margaret Thatcher stuck to her idea of success faithfully: higher goals, hard work and a certain sense of purpose. Rather than pray for miracle, she tried her best on her part to overcome impediments lied in her way. Therefore, when it came the time, her success took its course naturally. Where there is a will, there is a way. Margaret Thatcher clearly showed us that success will not be held back by things like sex distinction or family background. Great ambition, endeavour and determination are the things that make real differences.

Campbell's rise to power can be credited to various factors, but of these factors, her education, her native province, her actions as a cabinet minister and a desire for change are most important. These factors would lead Kim Campbell to rise as Canada's first female Prime Minister. The factors that would ultimately be her demise were stronger than those that had helped her there, the media and internal fighting made it impossible for Campbell to continue as Prime Minister after the 1993 election.
