The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian
When reading the rubric for the Movie/Book Report for our class, I was hoping it was going to be “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian by Sherman Alexie. My freshman year of high school at Whitnall High School in Honors English, we were assigned to read this book for a final project and present it in front of the whole class. Being a freshman I was hesitant to read the book because I didn’t understand the value of reading and how much worth there is in reading a story about another culture and society. Soon though I began that this was an amazing book and read in one night. Reading it again for a higher lever class made me realize all of the messages that Sherman Alexie was trying to convey and but sometimes conveying the wrong message at times as well. …show more content…

These view point allows for the author to convey themes and motifs in extraordinary, but yet subtle ways. One of these themes are stereotypes. Stereotypes are riddled throughout the whole book. Whether it was the poverish estate of the reservation, the gambling of every last cent on the reservation, that Indians had a high tolerant for pain (an odd one, but it still brings that most whites thought Indians could control the amount of pain they could withstand and feel) the profuse drinking of most of the reservation, which then led to violence on the reservation. Stereotypes were very prominent in the story. Each stereotype was given its own section in the story, which brought a different side of Junior in the story he is conveying. For
