Many powerful leaders start out as looking trustworthy and dependable, such as Stalin. As a whole, corruption of a leader and nation are still seen in today’s government. Absolute power corrupts absolutely in scenarios such as dictatorships, presidents, and even small groups between people. In the novel, Animal Farm, by George Orwell, the theme of absolute power corrupts absolutely is presented by the amount of power the pigs have, unlike the other animals.

Food is essential to all life forms. As the animals were starting to become independent, the animals were in charge to find their own food. The pigs, on the other hand, were lazy and did not feel the need to find their own sources of food and after the apples and milk went missing, it was discovered that the pigs took them.“So it was agreed without further argument that the milk and the windfall apples should be reserved for the pigs alone” (Orwell 36). The animals did not think much of this at the time because they figured it was a sign of respect. Although the animals first saw this as a sign of respect, before they knew it more of the pigs’ stances were being changed, to help the pigs. “Four legs good, two legs better” (Orwell 131-134) was modified from the original: “Four legs good, two legs bad.” The pigs began walking on two legs, as do humans. The original thought process was all animals walk on four legs and only humans walk on two legs so it was deemed as evil. After the corruption, the pigs deemed two legs as a sign of power. Sadly, after the long hardships the animals had to endure, it did not benefit them. The pigs had the upperhand and soon were similar to the humans. In Animal Farm, when a group of mistreated animals rebels against their cruel farm owner, two intelligent pigs on the farm take it upon themselves to lead the animals jointly. However, due to the animals' greedy co-leader Napoleon who dominates that power, the pigs' leadership turns into a corrupt power-hungry government that causes the entire farm system to collapse. In order to secure a life of luxury for Napoleon and his fellow pigs, Napoleon (with Squealer as his spokesman)uses language that intimidates, language that distorts the truth, and language that appeals to the emotions of the animals in order to manipulate gullible animals of Animal Farm.
The actions of the pigs express this theme by starting with good intentions, but slowly becoming more and more like what they were trying to avoid. In the beginning of the story Old Major gives a speech to the animals on the farm, and in this speech he mentions how cruel the humans are. During his speech Old Major uses Boxer the horse as an example when he says “You, Boxer, the very day that those great muscles of yours lose their power, Jones will sell you to the knacker, who will cut your throat and boil you down for the foxhounds.” (Orwell 11). The statement, “Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely”, simply means that the more power one has – the more control one has over people – then the more corrupt it is possible for that person to become. This statement is certainly correct if the person with the power has certain proclivities towards corruption. There are many examples in the book, “Animal Farm”, by George Orwell, of power corrupting those in charge because they had these tendencies. In the story, the most powerful animals are the two pigs, Napoleon and, to a lesser degree, Snowball. During the course of the story these pigs used their power to get more power, and in the process their inclinations towards corruption triumphed. When Old Major, the boar who came up with the idea of all animals uniting against humans, died, Napoleon and Snowball saw an opportunity where they could take control and took it. Napoleon used force to get rid of Snowball and take all the power for himself, and he used fear to keep the other animals from revolting. He used scapegoats so that he could not be blamed for anything that went wrong, and propaganda to brainwash the animals into loyal slaves. Napoleon changed and broke the commandments of Animal Farm to benefit himself, and he lacked empathy for all those who worked hard for him, executing those that might cause him trouble.

The declaration that all animals are equal quickly becomes a lie. Immediately after the revolution the pigs begin to grasp power over the other animals. “The pigs did not actually work… with their superior knowledge it was natural that they should assume the leadership”, (Pg 35). The increasing leadership of the pigs following the revolution for equality foreshadows that the pigs will rapidly assume as much power as the dictator that they fought against. The pig’s leadership and power also directly contradicts the belief that all animals are equal, mentioned in the earlier paragraph. Orwell demonstrates his ideas by having the ruling class of pigs disobey the guidelines of their beliefs, which they put in place themselves. Orwell’s belief that rebellion becomes corrupt is demonstrated by the animal’s executions. “Napoleon demanded whether any other animal had anything to confess… they were slain on the spot… and so the tale of confessions and executions went on…”, (Pg 83). The act of purging being committed by the animals directly contradicts the rule that no animal shall harm any other animal. Both of the quotes show that power is not always a good thing, and can sometimes make good people, do bad things. After the Animal Revolution the pigs take the initiative and place themselves in charge because of their claim of having higher intelligence. Over time this power begins to distort the basis of their revolt by recreating the same social situation they were previously in. “When the pigs takeover they claim that their goal is to preside a farm of equal animals, all working together to support one another, yet power quickly proves too much for a pig.” Though the animals originally took over the farm to increase the animal’s independence as a whole, because of the pig’s superiority they soon take the place of the humans further limiting their independence.
The pigs in George Orwell’s Animal Farm use specific laws, use unknown vocabulary and excruciating detail, implement scare tactics, and create and manipulate law to successfully attain the other animal’s trust, acquire certain luxuries unavailable to most animal, and establish themselves as the dictators of a totalitarian-like society. Through using detail, unknown vocabulary, specific laws, and scare tactics, the pigs acquire the ability to drink alcohol, sleep on beds, eat and drink the milk and apples, destroy Snowball’s credibility, and establish a trust between themselves and the other animals. From Orwell’s Animal Farm, one realizes how leaders with absolute power use carefully manipulated language to abuse their power.
Through use of language, the pigs appeal to the animals basic hopes and desires of a better life and a better future. They make others work extremely hard, while they themselves rest and unfairly reap most of the benefits of the work. For example, “Now comrades,... to the hayfield! Let us make it a point of honor get in the harvest more quickly than Jones and his men do.” Later in chapter three, Squealer is sent to justify the pigs selfishness and to convince the animals that the pigs are working in their favor. He said, “You do not imagine, I hope, that we pigs are doing this in a spirit of selfishness and privilege? Many of us actually dislike milk and apples...Milk and apples contain substances absolutely necessary to the well-being of a pig...the whole management and organization of this farm depend on us.” This how the animals are persuaded to believe almost anything without question.
George Orwell represents leadership as an easily corrupted and abused power through the characters throughout the novel, Animal Farm. This source of power has been used by leaders at the expense of their followers for their own personal gain, like Napoleon, the other pigs, and even including Snowball to an extent, who‘s first sign of corruption occurred early in the book when they took the milk harvested from the cows while the other animals were working. The pigs' corruption, excluding Snowball, grew worse and over time made life extremely difficult for the animals. In George Orwell’s Animal Farm, a main theme is that power corrupts those who possess it. A definition of corruption is,“dishonest or fraudulent conduct by those in power, typically involving bribery.” Orwell develops this idea through the character Napoleon in various ways. Looking back in the book, the animal’s rebellion quickly turned political and revolved around, “Leader, Comrade Napoleon (Orwell 81)”. The power Napoleon possed was executed through lies and selfishness, aided by the lack of intellectual ability in the other animals. The corruption of Napoleon’s power is displayed when he favors himself, along with the other pigs, and eventually the dogs, who all get better rations of food compared to the other animals. Another main demonstration of how power corrupts Napoleon is how he separates himself from the other animals on the farm, displaying his feelings if superiority to the other animals. At the end of the book, the pigs had completely manipulated the lower animals' memories by going against the original views on animalism and by wearing man's clothing and walking on two legs. George Orwell wrote this novel as a warning to man about what is going on in society today and he also warns about the importance of education.
At the beginning on the text, after the rebellion, the animals are all seen as equal, with a high quality of life. Napoleon and Squealer often mentioned how important it was for all animals to do their equal share of work; however they often did little to no work. They were able to do this by Squealer acting as the media and reminding the animals that the hard work that the pigs did deserved a larger break then everyone else. As the text progressed, Napoleon and his small group of pigs slowly changed the commandments to suit themselves. Many animals didn’t question the change in commandments; and when they did they were either proven wrong or made an example of via public executions. During chapter 6, the pigs are questioned after allegedly breaking the 4th commandment “no animals shall sleep in a bed”. Squealer was quick to react, by stating that the pigs required extra rest due to how smart they were. When Muriel goes to read the commandments to prove that what the pigs are doing is wrong, she finds that the board now states “no animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets”. After overthrowing Jones, the owner of the Animal Farm, all the animals got together and worked with more superiority for the reason that they were not slaves of the human beings anymore. Nevertheless, they were not mature enough to realize the fact that, they are turned into the slaves of their own kind. The pigs become the domineering characters in the farm after defeating Jones. Keeping all the apples and milk came to be the turning point of the story, because it was from that moment onwards that the pigs instigated to tyrannize over the animals. The main reason for that was the greed for power.
