Lincoln on Leadership Imagine walking six miles just to return three pennies that were accidently charged. Well the sixteenth president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln walked six miles to return the excess amount of change he had received. One of the greatest qualities Abraham Lincoln possessed throughout his life was being honest. Many may argue and say that the sixteenth president of United States of America was the greatest President if not one one of the greatest to ever run the oval office of the United States of America. Abraham Lincoln exemplified many of his leadership qualities through his actions in the years 1861-1865. Integrity “is a personal quality of fairness”. It is also means doing something in a reliable way. Lincoln was a great leader due to his integrity. For example, he was honest to many if not all of the people he worked with. Another example would be when lincoln “shot down a particularly offensive speaker”(page 72) which was the right thing to do. Lincoln was able to stop an offensive comment by comparing the speaker to a steamboat. This example demonstrates leadership since lincoln was able to do what was right and he did it in a reliable way. He demonstrated the “quality of fairness” by stopping an offensive comment that the speaker was going to make. Furthermore, “Lincoln attained success, admiration, and a positive image by maintaining his integrity and honesty”(page 56). Lincoln was able to become a great leader by having an important trait which was having integrity. Having integrity allowed him to do what was right and make good judgment. He was able to set an example to future leaders who want to as great or be a greater leader than lincoln. Although he had many valuable traits lincoln’s most valued traits are having integrity through his actions, having concern for those who work with him, having a vision for the future, and having courage. Through these five traits lincoln was able to lead effectively and become a great leader. He became a great figure to look up to and an example to follow. He was able to become a great leader to the difficulties he faced and being able to overcome them and find a solution. Lincoln set an example for many future leaders and is one of the greatest leaders to live.
