Lincoln on Leadership Imagine walking six miles just to return three pennies that were accidently charged. Well the sixteenth president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln walked six miles to return the excess amount of change he had received. One of the greatest qualities Abraham Lincoln possessed throughout his life was being honest. Integrity “is a personal quality of fairness”. It is also means doing something in a reliable way. Lincoln was a great leader due to his integrity. For example, he was honest to many if not all of the people he worked with. Another example would be when lincoln “shot down a particularly offensive speaker”(page 72) which was the right thing to do. Lincoln was able to stop an offensive comment by comparing the speaker to a steamboat. This example demonstrates leadership since lincoln was able to do what was right and he did it in a reliable way. He demonstrated the “quality of fairness” by stopping an offensive comment that the speaker was going to make. Furthermore, “Lincoln attained success, admiration, and a positive image by maintaining his integrity and honesty”(page 56). Although he had many valuable traits lincoln’s most valued traits are having integrity through his actions, having concern for those who work with him, having a vision for the future, and having courage.
