Abraham Lincoln had many failures in his career as a politician such as running for senate twice and losing both times (Dwyer, 31), but because of his perseverance he had success after success when he was elected as the 16th president of the United States. Abraham had many challenges after his election as well, but his ability to solve problems and push through hardships made him a great president. People didn’t believe in Lincolns ideas when he ran for government positions, which made it really hard to run for president (Etulian, 26). Abraham Lincolns many ideas about the abolition of slavery made it very hard to run for a position in government. Lincoln lost his second run for a senatorial seat to Stephen Douglas while they talked about slavery and whether or not it should be incorporated into Western Territories (Etulain 26). This shows that because of his stance on slavery, which was new and scary for the government officials and the people, he lost elections so becoming president was no easy task. The south also didn’t like his views on slavery. As soon as Lincoln was elected, before he was even inaugurated, Louisiana, Texas, and Arkansas seceded from the United States (Etulain 26). Lincoln was the president of the Union during the civil war. This gave him many challenges like finding generals like George G. Meade to lead his army. He also needed some big military feats to beat the south which he was able to do (Goodheart 9). This evidence suggests that he not only was smart with politics, but he was also able to help his military. At the end of the war Lincoln was able to pass the Emancipation Proclamation and free all the slaves while he was threatened by the senate. The senate told Lincoln that if he couldn’t pass it, they would bring down his administration (Dwyer 31). This shows that he truly was trying to make sure everyone was happy about freeing the slaves before he did anything, to the point it made people upset. Because of this, Lincoln was able to almost completely abolish slavery by the end of his term. Lincoln was able to end the practice of slavery peaceably (Dwyer 31). This proves that Lincoln was a political mastermind and his patience was able to help make most Americans happy.
