In your opinion, what is the role of therapy in a client’s/church member’s life?
In my opinion, therapy could have an especially meaningful role in the life of a client either in the clinical or church setting. When it is effective, counseling can provide an individual with numerous benefits. I believe that following The Fall of Adam and Eve, sin and pain became a reality for every human being; thus, most of us live with painful wounds. Although pain will last until Jesus returns, Scripture and research indicate that in the context of a caring relationship, the human pain can be alleviated. I believe becoming an effective clinician only occurs after significant effort. First, it is imperative that the clinician attends to her moral character development. When working with individuals who have been considerably wounded, clinicians would soon encounter that the client’s behaviors would generate strong reactions in any clinician as a human being, and the clinician would be tempted to respond to the client’s behaviors with judgment; therefore, it is imperative that the clinician is aware of the potential dangers and mistakes she could make. The AAMFT Code of Ethics indicates that the integrity(Section III) of the clinician is paramount, and specifically that the clinician is to not discriminate against the client (Code 1.1) when the client might engage in behaviors that are not in accordance with the clinician’s values(religion, sexual orientation, …show more content…

As a follower of Jesus, I desire to bring Him glory in everything that I do, and given that counseling is the career I have chosen, it is extremely important to me that I am intentional about how I reveal God’s glory through the work of counseling. As believers, we are called to excellence in everything that we do, therefore, we should also commit to the Code of Ethics as it is evident that the goal of Code is to hold clinicians accountable for excellence in clinical work. Having said that, the codes Development of New Skills (Code 3.6) and Maintenance of Competency (Code 3.1) are extremely important as to myself, and it is for this reason that I have decided to apply to the Marriage and Family Therapy Doctoral
