In a story, there will always be a villain or a protagonist, which makes the story what it is. Without the conflicts or problems that the villains start, there really wouldn’t be any stories, or if there were they would be boring because nothing dramatic would happen in them. William Shakespeare wrote many plays that had villains or protagonists in them, and because of this his plays were very appealing to the audience to sit and watch them. Some of the plays that Shakespeare wrote include the texts Othello, Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Hamlet, all which have a villain or protagonist in the story line. He does something awful to the king, which is also his brother, just so he can become the king of Denmark. Claudius does show some regret to what he had done, but also says that he enjoys being king to much to fully be sorry for what he has done. “He tries to ask God's forgiveness in a moving soliloquy but he realizes that he still reaps all the benefits of his crimes and cannot give them up” (Mabillard) Claudius can be seen as a very selfish character, and a villain because he did kill the king and he doesn’t have enough remorse to own up to it. Claudius puts on a front for everyone else, but in private he is completely different, and the only people who know this are Hamlet and the ghost of the dead King. The Ghost refers to him as "that incestuous, that adulterate beast" (1.5.42),and after this comment the audience really starts to figure out what is going on. At the beginning of the text, Claudius puts on a good show for everyone saying how sorry he is about the loss, but that they as a kingdom will have to move.
