It is often that people will find themselves in deep distress, wishing that they would not have to feel emotions ever again. With emotions, people can feel anger, hatred, sadness, and fear, however, they can also feel happiness, gratitude, and other positive emotions. Everyone will find themselves in a situation where they have negative emotions, and want emotions to cease to exist, however, would eliminating emotions end up being a wise choice? Having positive emotions can bring much joy to a person, however, if emotions were completely demolished, joy and happiness would not exist, making life feel much more plain. Positive emotions are also necessary, for they can bring confidence and reassure people. In other cases, negative emotions can bring positive effects as well, such as giving a person awareness. For these reasons, I do not believe that emotions should be eliminated, for they carry much value and importance.
Negative emotions, such as fear, anger, or hatred, are usually thought to be dreadful and useless, however, they have as much importance as positive emotions. For example, if one is in a situation where they experience great fear, they are much more aware of their surroundings. This can be helpful in many cases; if one is in a dangerous place, and that person is fearful, then he or she will be much more aware, making it easier to work efficiently. In general, all types of emotions are able to make a person work efficiently. Emotionless life would also be very plain and boring to many people. In The Giver, due to an artificial order, people live under strict rules that force efficiency, rather than allowing emotions to create efficiency. Their lifestyle is also plain, due to lack of having emotions. The life of people in The Giver is remarkably different from the lifestyle of people in real life. Since they do not have emotions, they would struggle to live in our society, because they would be unable to work efficiently. For all of these reasons, it is important to think twice whenever one wishes for emotions to cease to exist.
“How could someone not fit in? The community was so meticulously ordered, the choices so carefully made.” (Lowry, 48) In Lowry’s novel, The Giver, eliminating choices and feelings caused their society to be worse than our society today because you don’t have any choices and you don’t get to experience the feeling of joy and happiness.
The theme of suffering, In The Giver we see both physical and emotional suffering , the novel argues that pain is a part of human experience without it we cannot learn from the past and make informed decisions to a better future(Sisk17).
The Giver presents a community that appears to be perfect on the surface. Jonas's community is free of warfare, pain, sorrow and other bitterness we suffer in our society. The world seems to be secure and undergoes little conflict. Such a community seems flawless and is the idealistic society that we longed to live in. However , through Jonas's training, the imperfections of the Utopian community are revealed. The community allows little individual freedom and choice. In allowing only one person, the Receiver, to bear the memories of the world, the community frees itself from suffering and conflict. As a result, it gives up the ability to experience true feelings, passion, individual privacy, freedom and knowledge. To maintain the community's order, strict rules are applied to the inhabitants. "Releases" ( a less offensive term for kills) are performed to the citizens who jeopardize the stability and peace of the community. The inhabitants' careers and spouses are chosen by the Elders (or government).
It is one of the few brave books that exposes the horrors of humanity and serves as a cautionary tale for us all. Even in a “paradise” like Jonas' community, people still try to control others in order to keep the world pure, innocent, and shaped in their image, while they are ignorant of the past, of history, and their abilities to harm others even when they have good intentions. The Giver is a vital piece of literature for society today; its lessons of the horrors that can occur in society and the beauty that humanity offers are invaluable to us all. Freedom and choice are vital to a successful and fulfilled society. A world without freedom and choice “is a frightening world. Let’s work hard to keep it from truly happening.”
These states might be unpleasant at times, but sadness and anger can actually have a beneficial role in human development.
