A World Without Emotions

It is often that people will find themselves in deep distress, wishing that they would not have to feel emotions ever again. With emotions, people can feel anger, hatred, sadness, and fear, however, they can also feel happiness, gratitude, and other positive emotions. Everyone will find themselves in a situation where they have negative emotions, and want emotions to cease to exist, however, would eliminating emotions end up being a wise choice? Having positive emotions can bring much joy to a person, however, if emotions were completely demolished, joy and happiness would not exist, making life feel much more plain. Positive emotions are also necessary, for they can bring confidence and reassure people. In other cases, negative emotions can bring positive effects as well, such as giving a person awareness. For these reasons, I do not believe that emotions should be eliminated, for they carry much value and importance.
Negative emotions, such as fear, anger, or hatred, are usually thought to be dreadful and useless, however, they have as much importance as positive emotions. For example, if one is in a situation where they experience great fear, they are much more aware of their surroundings. This can be helpful in many cases; if one is in a dangerous place, and that person is fearful, then he or she will be much more aware, making it easier to work efficiently. In story of The Giver, by Lois Lowry, the people of the community live life without any negative emotions at all. The only reason they are able to survive in this way is because they are protected from any harm, and therefore, they do not need any negative emotions. In general, all types of emotions are able to make a person work efficiently. Emotionless life would also be very plain and boring to many people. In The Giver, due to an artificial order, people live under strict rules that force efficiency, rather than allowing emotions to create efficiency. Their lifestyle is also plain, due to lack of having emotions. The life of people in The Giver is remarkably different from the lifestyle of people in real life. Since they do not have emotions, they would struggle to live in our society, because they would be unable to work efficiently. For all of these reasons, it is important to think twice whenever one wishes for emotions to cease to exist.
