A Two Faced Mask
Imagine a world where masks are illegal or non-existent. Whether your intentions are for the good or bad positive or negative you have good or bad intentions, masks are not an option at all. All of society would be completely different, maybe possibly for the worse. You would not be able to save or fix relationships, hide or distort the truth, or even change your persona in anyway; you are forced to be your pure, unedited self whether you like it or not. Embracing and expressing yourself would become an extremely different experience, most likely in a bad way. In the short biography The Scream by Edward Munch, he was suppressing his real and honest feelings by not telling anyone what his thoughts were communicating to anyone what his thoughts and emotions were. “Munch’s mental state was on full display, and his style varied greatly depending on which emotion had taken hold on him while working on each particular painting.” this quote expresses how is trying to get across that Munch had confined all of his real emotions and thoughts vibes and mentality; Munch had refused to talk about it himself and did not let anyone try to make him feel better give him the mental health that he needed. He masked his feelings until the point where he physically could not hold himself in. But he since Munch was still so stubborn, so he decided to express communicate portrayed himself in through the work of his paintings. In similarly to Munch, the song I Am Not My Hair by India Arie shows how Arie was unable to communicate express or embrace herself her unmodified self to society. She would always change her hair when she was younger because she wanted so badly to gain acceptance from society as a whole. Whether she flat ironed it or permed it, it was never able to represent her, permed, or braided her hair, it was never able to say “India Arie”. Arie the lyrics of the song states,“I am not my hair, I am not this skin, I am not your expectations” which means that she is saying that is trying to say that her personality, IQ, and nature do not depend on looks one’s appearance, but on who you really are on the inside. As they always say, “It’s what is on the inside that counts”. Masks can may have the ability to lead the wearer to unhappiness and pain to the wearer and people around them.
