Nothing beats the idea of living a prestige lifestyle. Evelyn Nesbit was a young talented girl who climbed up the social ladder through capturing attention of many well-known men in the early 1900s (Gottschalk, 2008). Two of the men Nesbit was associated with were Stanford White and Harry Thaw (Gottschalk, 2008). Thaw's insanity caused the life of White (Gottschalk, 2008). Many seem to agree Nesbit is responsible for Thaw’s death. However, evidently, Nesbit is merely a victim of the situation. The influences of older men, her mother, and society brought upon a death that was out of her own control. Ultimately, Thaw is most responsible for the death of White. Even before his relationship with Nesbit, the public thought Thaw was insane. Thaw often hung out at the club where he would associate himself with younger women (Rasmussen, 2005). During Thaw’s court trial, the women from the club accused him of whipping and abusing them (Gottschalk, 2008). Before their marriage, Thaw knew Nesbit had sexual encounters with White (Gottschalk, 2008). Ideally, Thaw wanted his future wife to be a virgin (Gottschalk, 2008). Thus, he brought the situation on himself even though he knew about Nesbit’s past (Gottschalk, 2008). At one point, Thaw was insane enough to beat Nesbit and knock all her teeth out during their marriage (Rasmussen, 2005). Hence, it is evident Thaw suffered from mental illness, which caused him to murder White. White is not the only victim that suffered from Thaw’s psychotic episodes; Thaw often abused women, including Nesbit (Gottschalk, 2008). Substantially, this proves Thaw committed crime through his mental instabilities. His mental illness brought him to doing horrible acts towards other individuals (Rasmussen, 2005). The stereotype that exists for individuals who commit serial murder is one that mainly includes males of a specific race. However, it is now known that white males are not the only individuals who commit serial murder. Men and women from all racial and ethnic backgrounds and socio-economic statuses have been found to be serial murderers. Although this information has been presented to society, the cultural schema of the white male serial killer is still prevalent. The assumptions that involve serial murderers often include two aspects, the serial murderer is male and the serial murder is a type of “lust murder”, often involving sexual crimes by a sadist (Keeney and Heide, 1995). Keeney and Heide (1994) define serial murder to be the premeditated murder of three or more victims committed over time, in separate incidents, in a civilian context, with the murder being chosen by the offender.
Watching this tragic documentary left me with a lot of questions. I can relate this documentary to more than one theory that I have learned in class, but I think the best theory that explains what I saw is the Psychological School of Criminology. This documentary is a vivid picture of how a person’s life can devastate them psychologically and turn them into something deplorable. According to the Psychological School of Criminology crime results from inappropriate conditioned behavior or abnormal, inappropriate or dysfunctional mental processes stemming from the personality. Defective or abnormal mental processes have a variety for causes including a diseased mind, inappropriate learning, or inadequate conditioning, usually in early childhood. This theory best fits with the documentary of Aileen: The life and death of a Serial Killer. All the mental or psychological damage was done to her during her childhood. All that made an impact on her to the point where she has no self-respect.

There are many ways to decide what makes a man guilty. In an ethical sense, there is more to guilt than just committing the crime. In Charles Brockden Browns’ Wieland, the reader is presented with a moral dilemma: is Theodore Wieland guilty of murdering his wife and children, even though he claims that the command came from God, or is Carwin guilty because of his history of using persuasive voices, even though his role in the Wieland family’s murder is questionable? To answer these questions, one must consider what determines guilt, such as responsibility, motives, consequences, and the act itself. No matter which view is taken on what determines a man’s guilt, it can be concluded that Wieland bears the fault in the murder of Catharine Wieland and her children.
David Berkowitz, otherwise known as the “Son of Sam”, was notorious for his crimes committed between 1976 and 1977 that ended the lives of six innocent victims and wounded several others in New York (“David Berkowitz Biography”, n.d.). At first, police did not make a connection between the murders because there was nothing unusual about them; all the victims were shot with a 40 caliber gun, not fairly unusual during this time or place especially since the killings were over an extended period of time. Sometimes trying to conform to society’s expectations becomes extremely overwhelming, especially if you’re a woman. Not until recent years have woman become much more independent and to some extent equalized to men. However going back to the 19th century, women were much more restrained. From the beginning we perceive the narrator as an imaginative woman, in tune with her surroundings. The narrator is undoubtedly a very intellectual woman. Conversely, she lives in a society which views women who demonstrate intellectual potential as eccentric, strange, or as in this situation, ill. Since the dawn of time, the desire for immortality and eternal beauty has all but governed humans as a species. A fallacy that such a thing could be procured as the proverbial fountain of youth has consumed, destroyed, and even sent some into a spiraling descent of madness. From the destitute to the affluent and everyone between, no one has ever fully escaped the hypnotic lure of the notion of being forever young and beautiful. The journey to acquire such an unattainable object has even motivated some to implement unspeakable and deplorable acts against their own kind. One individual in particular, a late Hungarian Countess by the name of Elizabeth Bathory, is a perfect example of lust for perfection and beauty taken too far.
I can surely say that I won't be able to forget about our love story. You were the most beautiful thing that could ever happen in my life. The most tender feeling I have ever endured. In Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe’s Faust (Part One) as well as in Gotthold Ephraim Lessing’s Nathan the Wise, love plays a vital role. Love is the reason that an individual strays from the path to enlightenment and begins to act in strange, unpredictable ways. It decreases an individual’s ability to reason and takes away any incentive he might have to seek enlightenment. Since love is based on faith, it goes against the ideals of enlightenment which stress individual thinking. Love brings about a sense of fulfillment, which also works against the ideals of enlightenment which advocate a constant struggle within the individual to find truth or reach a higher plain of thought. In the Age of Enlightenment, love is a temptation man must overcome to reach enlightenment.
