A theme is the main subject that is being discussed or described in a piece of writing, a movie, etc.Themes are used throughout stories and poems to show an overall point. Authors use themes to get the readers to understand their point. In “A Thousand and One Nights”, the story’s theme was women cannot be trusted. There were three incidents that showed the author’s theme: the king’s wife cheating on him, the girl that got over on the demon, and Shahrazad tricking the king into letting her stay alive. The story started off showing how women could not be trusted by Shahzaman’s wife cheating on him and leaving him in misery. He was so depressed and did not look himself at all after finding the love of his life with another man. This is the first incident that showed how women could not be trusted. He left and went to stay with his brother, but while he was there he saw his brother’s wife cheating on his brother also. His brother did not know of the affair, and when Shahzaman tried to tell him, he did not believe it. A girl than had been kidnapped by a demon on her wedding night, so that she may be kept pure was another example of how women could not be trusted. The whole time the demon was sleeping, she was sleeping with other men. This girl, thought to still be pure by the demon, had slept with one hundred men, including the two brothers. After finding another incident of a woman being sneaky and manipulative, the brothers both agreed that women could not be trusted. This led Shahrayar to kill his wife and her slave girls, and start with a killing spree of every daughter of commoner or nobleman.
