A synopsis of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics in its current state
Artificial intelligence and robotics are growing to become increasingly influential in our society. With new technology always comes new concerns, however, with this particular technology, there are much greater concerns than any event in history. Artificial intelligence has presented dangers such as a loss of employment across all job spectrums, an exponentially increased wage gap in which there are a select few who hold the majority of the wealth and the rest are impoverished, and the mere fact that the magnitude of knowledge that would be acquired in incomprehensible to humans. Although we are not currently the largest or most ferocious species. Our intellect and consciousness enables us to act as a dominant species. Were these technologies to be implemented, our unique status would not only be stripped from us, but AI would most likely be the dominant species in regards to intelligence.
The ethical implications of AI
Considering a post- implementation world. A question arises of how exactly would we treat this technology. At what point does technology transition from being a machine, to being something that we may consider to be conscious? If this technology were to act and think in the manner that human beings do, then there could come a point where shutting a program down or destroying a piece of machinery could be classified as murder.
Many of the ethical implications of robot technology are based on defining consciousness. Neuroscientists are currently working on the matter (2) however, until then, the conversations regarding the ethics of AI and robotics seem to dead end at this same question. Essentially, we are questioning whether or not to treat these robots as equals or as machines. We are also basing this all on the assumption that, in the future, our own creation will not turn against
