“So she was quite alone in the world, except for her dog Ponto.” Kate Chopin’s “Regret” is the story of an elderly spinster who is burdened with the task of watching her neighbors four kids. The story is said to take place in rural Louisiana some time around the nineteenth century. Through this story Chopin portrays how people find regret in the most unlikely of places.
Katherine Chopin was born on February 8, 1850 in St. Louis, Missouri. She was bilingual and could speak both French and English. Unfortunately, her life was filled with misfortune. Before the age of eighteen, her father had died in a railroad accident, as well as her grandmother, and her half-brother of typhoid fever. By the age of thirty-two she was a mother of six and a widow. After the tragic death of her husband and mother Chopin began to write as a means of income and to fight off depression. Chopin is said to be one of the first feminist writers due to the strong independent female characters. Some say this is because she herself had to take on an unconventional role of an author after her husband died. Ironically, she is best known for “The Awakening”, which she was highly criticized for. It was said to be before its time, causing her to turn to writing short stories.
“Regret” is the story of a spinster named Mamzelle Aurlie. She lives alone and is very self-reliant. One day her neighbor whos mother is ill leaves her four children with Mamzelle Aurlie. ... it has incredible depth. Every character in her story wanted something, the neighbor to see her sick mother, the children to be cared for, and Mamzelle Aurlie to no longer be alone. Every sentence had significance, whether to tell us something about Mamzelle Aurlie or let us know why something was happening. Chopin also gives the reader an immense amount of information within the first paragraphs she does not wait or lead up to it. By the third paragraph we know pretty much all there is to know about Mamzelle Aurlie. Still, what really reveals the talent of Chopin is that in less than two thousand words she can tell the story of a life.
Chopin through this story depicts the odd ways regret can creep up on a person. In Mamzelle Aurlie’s case it was in the life she never thought she wanted. Through experiencing that life Mamzelle Aurlie saw what her own was lacking.
