A Raisin in the sun A Raisin in the Sun is a play filled with frustration,betrayal and many more emotions. A Raisin in the sun uses many symbols to represent objects for examples money and to show the characters deeper feelings about that certain objects.Lorraine Hansberry uses the symbol money to demonstrate that money can manipulate and hold down people and destroy relationships. Money is used a lot in this play to manipulate the Younger family.Money provides a constant source of conflict in the younger family. With just a few minutes of play Walter lee and ruth say “check coming tomorrow, huh?” (Hansberry 3) already they just want to have the check in there hand. Imagine being an African American family and being poor and getting handed a 10,000 dollar check and you need to pay for college your family needs a new home your brother wants to open a liquor store.Where would the money go? A house,College,Liquor store? You would have to very careful not to make a wrong decision and do what's best for your family.The younger family had a very hard time deciding what to do what there money and what to do to make everyone happy. The members of the Younger family view money in different ways, with Mama, Beneatha, and Ruth is imagining money as an means to an end and Walter thinking of it as an end in itself. Mama sees the insurance payment as a way to fulfill her dream of owning a house, which symbolizes her yearning for “freedom.The way money manipulates walter is making him angry, money makes him so distracted that he was even surprised and happy that his wife was having a baby.Walter is just continually frustrated by his inability to full fill the manly role of being the financial provider for his family.Mama: “Oh – So now it’s life. Money is life. Once upon a time freedom used to be life – now it’s money. I guess the world really do change” . .
