The American Dream in a Raisin in the Sun

In Lorraine Hansberry’s play a Raisin in the Sun, Walter struggles strongly with his obsession over money. This affects his idea of the “American Dream” and that of his sisters Beneatha. The play a Raisin in the Sun is about an African American family during the 1950s that struggled through money problems, racism. All while just trying to fulfill their ideas of the “American Dream”. In the end Mama and Walter both kind of fulfill their ideas of the “American Dream”.

What is the American Dream to you? Do you think it is that most people’s American Dream has something to do with being rich? He comes off very cold and hard to a lot of people,”anybody who talks to me has hot to be a good for nothing loudmouth” (Hansberry 5) He’s a man whose dream has only grated his obsession with money. He wants a liquor store and he thinks this will better his family’s life, but in reality though it only hurts their relationship more. In the end he takes the money and tries to fulfill his dream and spends all their money but all he does is disappoint his family.
