America’s society has flourished in numerous ways. Over the last few decades a greater number of the population is becoming better educated, gaining more job opportunities, and of course, the technological advancements have been popular. Unfortunately, some of these advancements have come with burdens. With the popularity of technology on the rise people are exposed to more advertisements than ever before, thus, resulting in media influence becoming exceedingly more powerful. This does not necessarily seem like it would be a negative fact, until one takes note of the messages that are frequently being displayed throughout society. The American media routinely imposes its strict ideals of what constitutes beauty, which results in several harmful consequences throughout its society. Everyday American citizens are receiving messages implying that who they are is not acceptable. A primary focus of the American media is celebrities. This is crucial to point out because young people, especially, look up to celebrities as their role models. They read about them in magazines and follow them over the internet daily. They want to know what they are doing and how they are doing it. How they dress, what they eat, and how they stay in shape are common interests people pursue. Within their research about their favorite celebrities they find the comments of critics, whether good or bad, following them as well. On the cover of most popular magazines is a picture of a famous female actress, model, or singer and a headline about how much weight she has lost and how people can do it themselves too. Even though the message is portrayed as a health benefit, the outcomes in society are anything but. Though it is noted when a celebrity is looking sick... ... middle of paper ... ...he mass media. People who are feeling insecure about their bodies are getting younger and younger, and the results are getting worse and worse as media gains more power over the society. Additionally, due to the media’s growing influential power, ever time that a magazine gets published more women are susceptible to being affected by the woman on the cover. The more often that people are exposed to the damaging messages, the higher rate of negative body- image and self-satisfaction spread throughout society. This will continue to result in a higher rate of eating disorders and self-harming activities until enough people can come together and put a stop to the messages being conveyed. It is simply unfair for people to be given messages every day telling them that who they are is unacceptable and they should trade in their health in order to become beautiful.
