“We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.” Martin Luther King Junior once said. “Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” he said. Dr.King had a dream that one day he would “look to a day when people would not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” A point that has been disputed about the Civil Rights is using the “passive unless provoked" and the violent approach, but upon research, it seems clear that the Martin Luther King Junior’s approach to the civil rights movement was most effective, because he was a powerful yet inspirational leader. Martin Luther King Junior was a charismatic leader, never using violence to put a stop to inequality. He followed the ways of Mahatma Ghandi, to which both of them were peaceful. Boycotts, protests, marches, that were effective, putting an end to racial discrimination.     The main goal of the Civil Rights Movement was to instate equality under the law. King was a figurehead for the Civil Rights Movement. King’s ability to organize factions into a force that was unaffected by violence greatly contributed to the success of the Civil Rights Movement. In a letter he wrote from a Birmingham jail, King describes the four steps to non-violent protest. The first step is “collection of the facts to determine whether an injustice exists.”i This relates to Thoreau’s critique of an unjust government. Thoreau believed that every machine had friction, yet “when the friction comes to have its machine…let us not have such a machine any longer.”ii In the case of civil rights, the government has the friction of racial inequalities. That friction had several machines which enables whites to prevail over African Americans. King’s second step was negation. Thoreau lived during a time when negotiation was non-existent. He met the government “once a year--no more--in the person of its tax-gatherer; this is the only mode in which a man situated as I am necessarily meets it.”iii In the case of Thoreau and King, their struggle could not be resolved by simple negotiation.     Until the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., his life’s work was dedicated to the nonviolent actions of blacks to gain the freedoms they were promised in the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 by Abraham Lincoln. These injustices had become so burdensome to blacks that they were “plunged into an abyss of despair” (King, 1963). Malcolm X viewed the world similarly to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., however; his beliefs to changing the status quo were slightly different from his political counterpart. Malcolm X realized that “anger could blind human vision” (X, 1965). In realizing this, X knew that in order to achieve racial freedom blacks had to “forget hypocritical politics and propaganda” (X, 1965).
