Everyone has that one memory of something that changed their life forever; it could be losing a loved one or mastering chess, but everyone has an experience that outstands all others. I have been interested in the healthcare field for as long as I can remember. One of the most vivid memories I hold of wanting to pursue said field from a younger age was being photographed for a doctor’s magazine. I clearly remember the photographer asking the nurse to pretend to take my blood pressure and I thought to myself, “I want to do this someday. This might have been the most impacting experience to continue my aspirations, but the most impacting person was my grandma’s nurse, and she definitely had the greatest effect on me. This nurse was the bridge between the doctors and the patient. Without even knowing my grandma, this nurse massaged her, talked to her, even sang to her. She came every morning to bathe her, during the time she was there. She handled one of the most beloved persons’ in our family with such care and delicacy and no sign of disgust, that I was truly left with in awe. My mother asked her how she was able to do this everyday without showing signs of disgust or difficulty. She responded, “To me, your grandmother is my grandmother. I would want someone to treat my grandmother as if they were their own blood, so that is what I do. And personally, I would love for someone to do the same for me someday. We are all human beings, it is our duty to take care of one another, no matter how hard.” This was the moment. This was the precise moment when I knew in my heart that I did not want to do anything other than that. I began my college career unsure of the path ahead of me. I knew I had a passion for medicine, however, I did not know which direction I would take. With the expansive amount of options offered within the fields of science and medicine, it was difficult to narrow down exactly what direction I wanted to take. I gained some clarity the summer of my sophomore year when I stayed at a close friend’s home, whose father, a practicing Medical Physician, became somewhat of a mentor to me. The passionate way in which he discussed the practice of medicine led me to develop an interest in pursuing a career as a physician. Since a young age, I always felt inclined towards pursuing a career in the health care field; daydreaming about myself working at a clinic or hospital and making a positive impact on someone’s life. When I started college, I decided to major in Biology and explored the different career options the health field had to offer me by shadowing dietitians, nurses, physicians, and other healthcare workers to find my ideal job.
I have had many experiences that have helped me an immense amount in shaping my choice of a career. Being a member of the New Visions Health and Medical Careers programs at Cayuga Medical Center allowed me to take my education into my own hands by escaping the classroom into the hospital for my senior year of high school. During my full-year medical internship, I shadowed over 30 medical disciplines, in both in-patient and outpatient facilities. Additionally, I clinically shadowed the care of patients from birth to the end of life of many different patients. This gave me a thorough understanding and a dense foundation of healthcare and allowed me to take initiation of my own
As a student that is currently seeking a career in the medical professions, I have had to routinely contemplate my reasons for pursuing such an extensive education program in a field that is constantly demanding excessive time and effort. I know of students—many friends and acquaintances of mine included—that have the most sure-fire, inspirational stories that align with their desire to become doctors, surgeons, physician assistants, etc. They always seemed to have a story that emphasized their desire to “give back” what they have received from the medical community. Watching my brother struggle and then being able to overcome these difficulties, as well as seeing other children around him who were not as fortunate, really pushed me, even at a young age, to make a difference. My family, both immediate and extended, were very supportive, and I felt a real positive push towards working hard to achieve that goal of working in health care. In high school, I was fortunate enough to do a cooperative placement at the Peterborough Regional Health Center’s Intensive Care Unit.
I found a job as CNA for the patient who had disabilities. One patient in particular changed the direction of my life and started me thinking about working in medicine. I took care of an older woman who was unable to ambulate due to her diagnosis of stroke. She experienced chronic weakness of bilateral lower extremity so I supported her with my arms to steady her. When I looked into her eyes, I could feel her saying, “you truly care about me, understand me, and thank you for taking the time to sense my expression and desire.” That’s the care all of us have deep inside, where our motives no longer become self-seeking but other-seeking. My goal in pediatrics revolves around determination to provide comprehensive and compassionate care. I want to be a part of pediatric residency program that offers the opportunity to train in a well-structured, well-administered with family like environment, where teachers love to instruct and direct us through their vast amount of knowledge. I know your pediatrics program would be a good fit for my passions and talents. I am confident that my pursuit of this career path is an invitation to an even fuller and more exciting life ahead.

In order to determine whether or not clinical medicine was the right career for me, I started shadowing Dr. Richard Turner in the ER. Through my experiences with him, I learned that medicine is a problem solving process. As I watched, he would take a patient's history and try to piece together the correct diagnosis by deciding which scenarios were more likely than others. I was attracted by the dynamic nature of each patient's diagnosis and the necessity for an open mind. My hobby of flying has taught me to look at everything in life with a new perspective and to assess the situation from as many angles as possible. Watching Dr. Turner has confirmed my perception of a medical career and the nature of the work involved. Since I love puzzles and problems, the problem solving aspect also increased my desire to become a physician.

The idea of taking care of others truly makes me feel that I serve a purpose, not only to better the life of myself but the life of others. Therefore, I believe that becoming a pediatrician will help me combine the best of both worlds into a career that I adore and cherish.
When I was at my rotation in medical school, after seeing patients in the medicine unit and learning about diabetes, hypertension, and various other diseases, I immersed myself in the field. I tried to figure out ways of contributing to the specialty even though I was just a medical student, and made up my mind to become an internist. After finishing my internal medicine rotations, I was sent to complete obstetrics and gynecology rotations. During the rotation, I was watching the senior doctors delivering babies and treat different diseases that women encountered. I looked at the new mothers and witnessed their happiness which drove my motivation in obstetrics and gynecology. After three months of obstetrics and gynecology rotations, I began a pediatrics rotation. Seeing the children there growing and overcoming whatever ailed them, with all their tears, pain, and joy, made me so overwhelmed I wanted to become a pediatrician.
I was visiting my brother in Massachusetts when I got sick on the airplane. I went to the emergency room and I was immediately admitted into the hospital. The doctor recognized my symptoms and immediately took action to medically treat my condition. I enjoyed my week stay in the hospital because the nurses and I became so close and the nurses were there for me when I needed them. The nurses kept me inform, comfort me by making me feel everything was going to be alright. The nurses that took care of me genuinely cared and guided me each step to recovery.
