A Nurse Changed My Life

Everyone has that one memory of something that changed their life forever; it could be losing a loved one or mastering chess, but everyone has an experience that outstands all others. I have been interested in the healthcare field for as long as I can remember. One of the most vivid memories I hold of wanting to pursue said field from a younger age was being photographed for a doctor’s magazine. I clearly remember the photographer asking the nurse to pretend to take my blood pressure and I thought to myself, “I want to do this someday. This might have been the most impacting experience to continue my aspirations, but the most impacting person was my grandma’s nurse, and she definitely had the greatest effect on me. This nurse was the bridge between the doctors and the patient. Without even knowing my grandma, this nurse massaged her, talked to her, even sang to her. She came every morning to bathe her, during the time she was there. She handled one of the most beloved persons’ in our family with such care and delicacy and no sign of disgust, that I was truly left with in awe. My mother asked her how she was able to do this everyday without showing signs of disgust or difficulty. She responded, “To me, your grandmother is my grandmother. I would want someone to treat my grandmother as if they were their own blood, so that is what I do. And personally, I would love for someone to do the same for me someday. We are all human beings, it is our duty to take care of one another, no matter how hard.” This was the moment. This was the precise moment when I knew in my heart that I did not want to do anything other than that. I will never forget the compassion and kindness of this nurse, and great impact she had on the wellbeing of my grandma and the inspiration she holds for me. Her words will forever remain with
