Love is Crazy
In Shakespeare’s play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, love appears to be the common theme of several storylines being played out simultaneously. Although these stories intersect on occasion, their storylines are relatively independent of one another; however, they all revolve around the marriage of Theseus, the Duke of Athens, and Hippolyta, the Queen of the Amazons. If love is a common theme among these stories, then it is apparent that love makes people act irrationally.
In Act I Scene I, Egeus, father of Hermia, is clearly upset with his daughter’s choice in Lysander as a suitor. Egeus’ has so much love for Demetrius that he has chosen him to be Hermia’s husband in an arranged marriage. Egeus’ desire to have Hermia marry Demetrius is so strong that he would rather Hermia be dead than marry another. Titania has been giving all of her time and affection to a “changeling” child, left in the custody of Titania. Not only is Oberon jealous that Titania no longer gives affection or time to him, but Oberon selfishly wants the boy to be employed as his henchman. When Titania refuses to disclose the boy’s location to Oberon, Oberon devises a plan to use magic on Titania by forcing her to fall in love with the next living creature she lays her eyes upon. How this is supposed to lead to the boy, I have no idea. But Titania ends up falling in love with an Athenian man who has the head of a donkey; using the strange donkey-love distraction, Oberon is able to locate and take the boy. Does Oberon want the boy solely for the purpose of employing him as a henchman, or does Oberon wish to rekindle a relationship between himself and Titania that the boy has interrupted? Either way, forcing your wife to fall in love with a donkey man is pretty outrageous and

Puck, who by his very nature cannot exist in rational society, propels the action of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. He is a manifestation of mischief and the unpredictability of nature, which governs not only the fantastical woods outside of Athens, but also the Athenians themselves when it comes to love.
