There have been strict gender roles set in place for men and women to follow, throughout history. During Shakespearean times, The females were viewed as this weak, emotionally and physically. Women were expected to always listen and obey their husbands, father or male when demanded. Women were never in positions to make the rules. Men on the other hand, were expected to be the head of their households, strong, and wise. In “A Midsummer Night's Dream” written by Shakespeare, you may notice a lot of “gender roles” being played. They were also expected to be good with the handling of finances and property. It was also acceptable for them to be barbaric, boisterous and socially well connected. This has given the men of this time an overwhelming sense of power, respect and freedom; rights which were not given to women at this time. Far from what was socially acceptable in regards to men, the gender identity of women was of a somewhat weaker nature. Women during Shakespearean time were regarded as docile, quiet and non-opinionated. Their socially acceptable role in many cases was to be domestic, entailing them to spend countless hours in the home, tending to basic familial needs, such as cooking and cleaning. This position prevented many women to receive an education or to socialize outside of the home. As a result of their inferior social status, they were expected to be submissive and to cater to her husband’s needs at all times. Women in Shakespearean time were also treated as property, either by their husbands or fathers, which diminished any sense of self-worth they may have possessed. This gender ideology ultimately paralyzed women, as the majority were helpless to alter their social standing or designated familial role.

This place where this play takes play is mostly in the forest that is inhabited by fairies. A lot of drama takes place like an actor suddenly having a donkey’s head or two men suddenly falling for one woman. All this occurring during the Elizabethan Era would probably have been unfathomable but yet just because it is supposed to be a dream, it was all possible. Destabilizing the natural order of men and women is one of the main themes in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and as the reader can tell no one does this better than Titania and Oberon. The message here is clear: it is acceptable to let women have their fill of power and control, but at the end of the day it is critical that men regain the upper hand in order to restore the natural order of life. Though Shakespeare writes in favor of the feminist protagonists, feminism is not the goal of the writer as he allows the antagonist men to win in the end. Such will be the attitude towards women for the next four hundred and fifty years. But until then, Titania will be immortalized in Shakespeare’s lines as the one woman brave enough to try to defy the accepted norms, if only for a little while.

This play is a comedy about five couples who suffer through love’s strange games and the evil behind the devious tricks. This play begins as Theseus, the Duke, is preparing to marry Hippolyta. He woos her with his sword. Hermia is in love with Lysander. Egeus, Hermia’s father, forbids the relationship with Lysander and orders her to marry Demetrius. Demetrius loves Hermia, but she does not love him. On the other hand, Helena is in love with Demetrius. To settle the confusion, Theseus decides that Hermia must marry Demetrius or become a nun. In retaliation to her father’s command, Hermia and Lysander run away together. Amidst all the problems in the human world, Titania and Oberon, the fairy queen and king, continually argue about their various relationships that they have taken part in. (Scott 336) Titania leaves Oberon as a result of the arguments. Oberon is hurt and wants revenge on Titania. So he tells Puck, Oberon’s servant, to put a magic flower juice on her eyelids while she is sleeping. This potion causes the victim to desperately in love with the first creature that they see. Oberon’s plan is carried out, but the potion is also placed on Lysander’s eyes. Lysander awakes to see Helena, who is aimlessly walking through the woods, and instantly falls in love with her. She thinks that he is making fun of her being in love with Demetrius, so she leaves and Lysander follows. This leaves Hermia to wake up alone. Puck now has journeyed to the area where several actors are rehearsing. He uses his magic to turn one of them into a donkey, in hopes that Titania will awake to see it.
The women of Shakespeare’s plays are a highly discussed topic by many critics. Shakespeare portrays various aspects of his female characters through their relationships with the men in their lives. Numerous Shakespearean females appear to be strong, independent characters and would not be perceived as such if it were not for their relationship or relationships with the men in their lives. Shakespeare likes to focus his attention on the relationships between fathers and daughters, as well as the relationship between husbands and wives.
