Power and control plays a big role in the lives many. When power is used as a form of control, it leads to depression and misery in the relationship. This is proven through the themes and symbolism used in the stories Lesson before Dying, The fun they had, The strangers that came to town, and Dolls house through the median of three major unsuccessful relationship: racial tension between the African Americans and the caucasians in the novel Lesson before Dying, Doll’s House demonstrates a controlling relationship can be detrimental for both individuals and The Stranger That Came To Town along with The Fun They Had show that when an individual is suppressed by majority they become despondent. For example, Ibsen uses symbols to show how a dominant person can hurt a subservient person within any relationship. Throughout the play, the husband Torvald, uses degrading pet names when referring to Nora. There's a clear pattern in the nicknames Torvald gives his wife as they are often small, docile animals and he uses them in a deteriorating tone, for example “Come, come, my little skylark must not droop her wings. What is this! Is my little squirrel out of temper?” (1.71-73).Torvald often uses these pet names to discredit and undermine Nora as these nicknames as highly childish and discredit her position as his partner/equal. Hence proving that Nora is the puppet and Torvald is the puppet master as he is the figure of control of the whole marriage and that leads them into an unhappy/ miserable marriage. Likewise the Nurse symbolizes how the as Nora is controlled she often thinks about abandoning her children when times get tough. She is often seen contemplating abandoning her children as she would like to disregard her responsibilities as a parental figure. This is shown when the nurse and nora talk and say the following,“Do you think so? Do you think they would forget their mother if she went away altogether?” (2.34-35). In the Short story by Flack soap is a symbol which is used to display the unfair treatment of the Duvitches as it is supposed to be used as a cleansing tool, however, it was used to exposed the communities view of the Duvitches. This was proven the narrator described the following; “Father, holding the half-melted cake of soap in his palm silently but accusingly, for the fish had perished miserably in the soapy water and were unfit to eat.” (Flack 7). The fish in the bucket where a symbol for Duvitch family as both are confined and harmed by the behavior of the community. Hence proving, this was a consequence of the unfair treatment of controlling society that the hatred Andy displays is how the community feels as a whole and as they spent more time in their new community the more they weakened and became more broken. Likewise, the boys in the story The Strangers that Came to Town where also a symbol of the baised treatment within the controlling society as they where humiliated and mocked by their peers, the family was often described as “meek” (Flack 3).
