A Family Who Lived In Syria

This documentary examined a family who lived in Syria, eventually fleeing to Germany in search of a better life, without their father who was taken by ISIS. This family consisted of Sara, 4; Farah, 7; Helen, 10; Mohammed, 12; the mother, Hala; and the father, Abu Ali. They lived in a town named Aleppo located in Syria. Abu Ali was first an engineer and then became part of the rebel group in Syria when the war began. The children and the mother’s lives revolved around their father. Mohammed says, “Whatever happens to the men or my father happens to us to” (5:05). Helen, later discusses again the importance their father had on them. She utters, “We’re resisting with my father to the death. Either we die or we’ll be victorious, God willing” (13:28). Also, around the 18-minute mark, after their father was taken by ISIS, Helen again speaks about how since her father is taken, she has nothing to worry about and she constantly wonders if he will ever return and she beats herself up …show more content…

In February 2015, the family was staying with a family member in Istanbul still waiting for a response to be housed somewhere. In March of 2015, the mom and children finally received good news, that an asylum in Goslar was accepting them. They received an equivalent of about $2,220.00 per month, with free health care and education. All of the family also got their passports so they could return to their homeland to visit what they left behind. Hala was fearful of religious intolerance because Muslims were viewed as terrorists, which later became more prevalent in the beginning of 2016. Far-rights groups protested against refugees, like themselves, and the children would hear discouraging things being said in school. However, the family realized that they are securing a future for themselves in Germany, but they will never forget that Syria is their homeland and that is where they came
