Haunting versus Insanity Hauntings are sometimes believed to be a contributing factor of people acting insane. The spirits could control what the person's mind thinks and hear and make them appear to be crazy. Haunting may make people appear to be crazy but this presence is actually there. It is real and could interact with you. Physical evidence, and others who believe could help prove a ghost is there. In “The Yellow Wallpaper,” by Charlotte Perkins Stetson, Jane, the narrator, becomes infatuated with her yellow wallpaper. The first sign of a spirit in the room is the eyes she sees in the wallpaper. Stetson writes, “There is a recurrent spot where the patterns lolls like a broken neck and two bulbous eyes stare at you upside down” (Stetson, 649). She describes the eyes as following her around the room as if there were a person who those eyes belonged to. She explains the eyes to have a lot of expression in them but never explains whether it was a positive or negative expression. When Jane becomes more fond of the wallpaper the figure becomes clearer and clearer. Jane describes the figure as, “Always the same shape, only very numerous. And it is like a woman stooping down and creeping about behind that pattern. I don’t like it a bit” (Stetson 652). The haunting of this spirit grows everyday that Jane is in that room. Jane soon sees the woman in the wall “shake bars” like she is trying to get out. Stetson writes, “Then in the very bright spots she keeps still, and in the very shady spots she just takes hold of the bars and shakes them hard.” (Stetson, 654). This explains that the woman was grown and its power has been getting stronger to where she can present her full self to Jane.
