Introdction Everyone has seen someone being treated unfairly. Joseph Stalin, a leader of the Soviet Union, was one of the least humane yet helpful dictator. Joseph Stalin was the reason for millions dead. He showed the world not all people with good intentions aren’t necessarily good people. During Stalin’s childhood, he had to help his mother, which stopped him from pursuing his dream job. During Stalin’s dictatorship, he caused wars and transformed societies. In Stalin’s elderly period, he was paranoid and wasn’t properly buried until 1961. Stalin left this world with a big impact that varied from less people on Earth to fighting for women’s equality. Stalin grew up as a poor, only child (“Joseph Stalin’s Early Years and Family” np). He grew up an only child because the other two died at a young age (16, McCollum). As a boy, Stalin’s face was left with permanent scars due to getting smallpox as a young child (“Joseph Stalin’s Early Years and Family” np). As a young boy, he would rarely miss Mass and he would sing in the choir, and get very good grades (18, McCollum). He had a bad relationship with his father (17, McCollum). His father was an abusive, alcoholic shoemaker (“Joseph Stalin’s Early Years and Family” np).Once, Stalin had to protect his mother from being abused by throwing a knife at his father (17, McCollum). As he grew up, he was nicknamed Soso (17, McCollum). His thirst for reading grew tremendously, which resulted in him sometimes stealing books from the classmates and bookstores (18, McCollum). For most people that know who Joseph Stalin was, they can agree on one thing: Stalin was one of the most brutal and ruthless leaders that mankind has ever seen. He is known as the instigator and leader of the Reign of Terror, which incorporated extremely horrifying purges. These purges have been estimated to have killed five times as many people as the Holocaust. The purges also helped him establish his power base, which allowed him to build one of the most powerful countries in its day and age. But he was not born evil, in fact, when he was a child, family and friends said he was shy. This does not mean he didn’t have a bad childhood, which happened quite often in rural Georgia. The pain of his childhood built as the years went by. Growing up admiring people like Karl Marx, Machiavelli, and Ivan the Terrible only stoked the fire even more. I believe that Joseph Stalin’s reign of terror can be traced directly back to his brutal childhood and complete belief in Marxist principles.

In the beginning Josef Stalin was a worshiper of his beloved Vladimir Lenin. He followed his every move and did as he said to help establish and lead the Bolshevik party. Much of the early part of his political career was lost due to his exile to Siberia for most of World War I. It wasn’t until 1928, when he assumed complete control of the country were he made most of his success. After Lenin’s death in January 1924, Stalin promoted his own cult followings along with the cult followings of the deceased leader. He took over the majority of the Socialists now, and immediately began to change agriculture and industry. He believed that the Soviet Union was one hundred years behind the West and had to catch up as quickly as possible. First though he had to seal up complete alliance to himself and his cause.
During Stalin’s regime, the individual Russian was the center of his grand plan for better or worse. Stalin wanted all of his people to be treated the same. In the factory the top producer and the worst producer made the same pay. He wanted everyone to be treated as equals. Through violence and oppression Stalin tried to maintain an absurd vision that he saw for the Soviet Union. Stalin’s hunger for power and paranoia impacted the Soviet society severely, having devastating effects on the Communist Party, leaving it weak and shattering the framework of the party, the people of Russia, by stunting the growth of technology and progress through the purges of many educated civilians, as well as affecting The Red Army, a powerful military depleted of it’s force. The impact of the purges, ‘show trials’ and the Terror on Soviet society were rigorously negative. By purging all his challengers and opponents, Stalin created a blanket of fear over the whole society, and therefore, was able to stay in power, creating an empire that he could find more dependable.
Communist leaders tended to reject natural human rights, but Stalin took things up a notch. At the beginning of his rule as leader, Stalin forced millions of peasants off of their homes and onto collective farms. Stalin would also imprison, torture, and kill citizens who were accused by Stalin. Another human rights violation by Stalin is privacy. Stalin created an intimidating Police State specifically used to spy on civilians. Anyone who disrespected rules were imprisoned. Also, many civilians starved to death due to poor food distribution with a rough harvesting season. These human rights violations happened all at once relative to what citizens have experienced in the past, and it angered millions of people. Some people not being threatened by Stalin’s rule liked his ideas and how he ran things in Russia, but the vast majority wanted him dead.
Stalin’s leadership of the Soviet Union can be best described as a period of terror and censorship. In other words, he was very strict, considering the fact that he created the totalitarian government. In order to create this type of government, Stalin used fear and propaganda. He took part in The Great Purge, which was a campaign of terror that was supposed to eliminate anyone who threatened Stalin’s power. He also relied on secret police, who would arrest and execute any traitors.
