Career Essay: Animator To start off your journey to becoming an animator, you will need the proper education and degree. The education required of an animator is 4 years of college, though you might be able to slip by with 2. This is very unlikely though. The best degree titles would be in animation and visual effects, though there are probably others that would suffice as well. As far as training goes, an aspiring animator should know how to use and be familiar with all kinds of software. Some examples include Adobe Photoshop, JavaScript, and MAYA to name a few. Colleges with a reputation for art would be an obvious choice, and would provide the best environment for someone who is looking to be in the field. As far as the skills and talents you need to excel in this career, they are numerous. To be an animator, it is important to have skills in drawing. This will make it easier to perform your job because you will know how to draw what you are animating. Also, having the ability to break things down and analyze your environment is important. On average, an animator will work 40 hours a week from Monday to Friday. This may not apply when deadlines for a project approach, when hours may increase drastically. Also, as one moves up in the industry, hours have the potential to increase. Some challenges that may occur in animation would be having the patience to draw every individual panel. Another challenge might be the many hours that you will have to work. Despite this though, workers will be able to get a long break after a project is finished.
