People’s everyday lives are influenced by music and have been for years. Music started off soft and smooth with Beethoven and classical music and has changed drastically over the centuries. Music groups have always influenced each other and that helps create genre diversity. In the late 20th century, around the 1970’s, the first metal genre song came out by one of the most popular metal bands called “Black Sabbath.” Metal music eventually branched out with different genres of itself and created doom metal, thrash, and glam. Metal was very popular in the 80’s, and in the 90’s it continued. The 90’s came out with grunge metal. With this love of music, Layne wanted to try a musical instrument so he tried trumpet and switched to drums at age twelve and was reported that he was a pretty decent drummer but never was able to get bigger than a few friends to play with. Layne eventually explained how he got into singing and stated “ I was playing drums and I wanted to sing one song, and the singer said ‘No, you’re the drummer. Drummers don’t sing.’(then Phil Collins came out later to prove him wrong) So we got in a fight and I packed up my drums and got in my van and drove straight downtown, traded in my drum set for a delay, a microphone, and a mic cord, and went down and started practicing. I was horrible at first, but I found my instrument.” Later Layne told Ken that he sold everything for a microphone and Ken never really thought Layne had a good voice to begin with. Layne hated school and Ken figured something was up regarding the smell of alcohol coming off of Layne’s clothes. Layne stated that he once tried Dexatrim and smoked marijuana while at a friend’s house with Ken, even if Ken did not smoke. Layne had the option to drop off after some problems at school but stayed when the girls “started to notice him.” Layne got into a few fights after getting bullied and progressively got interested in drug culture and music in early high school. Layne eventually got into some family problems after being forced to go on a family road trip and a verbal fight with his mom. Jim stated that Layne was basically verbally abusing his mother and punished Layne with a spanking for the first time. Layne was left and Jim and Nancy came back to an oddly spotless house with the smell of lysol, and Layne was shaken and crying. Layne told some friends that his parents were gone for the
