Response: This topic is relevant to today’s world as 3D printers are becoming popular and available for home-use. The issue is that you used the 3D printer to print a replacement door handle which you put on the refrigerator where you broke the door handle. There are ethical issues which relate to this are Act Utilitarianism and Kantianism. An ethical issue regarding Act Utilitarianism with this action is that buying the replacement handle would not increase the total happiness that can occur. Another ethical issue regarding Kantianism is that printing the 3D Printed handle is not morally the right thing to do. For these ethical reason, there are pros and cons to the decision of printing out a replacement part at a much lower cost. The pros to this action of printing out a replacement door handle are the reason that this action is the better of the two. Despite the fact that it was a kind act from your friend, there are ethical issues to this which, in this case, leads to more positives than negatives. An ethical issue which must be considered is that the basic rights that this movie maker has includes intellectual property and that is potentially being abused because the movie maker is supported by the revenue and she does not get the revenue because a fellow student gave it to you. However, in the same sense, the fellow student bought it and is free to do as he pleases with it, so the ethical theories of Social Contract theory and Kantianism are involved. The Social Contract theory states that everyone has basic rights, and Kantianism says that the most right thing to do should be done. This is where the pros and cons must be considered and will show that the pros of simply watching this movie that a fellow friend gave you is
